.iSpecification of Letters. Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 33 68.
Application filed. $eptember lit, 1995i Serial No. 273,516.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLnMnivr -LEE Dow- .vnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cmcinnatn 1n the county/of Hamilton and State of- Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention broadly relates to a means automatically actuated by atype-writer to indicate on the writing sheet the variations in the spacing.
My invention more particularly relates to an attachment to .a type-writer having the general construction, function and objects of the device shown in my former patent No. 698,469, granted April ing attachment fortype-writers.
notch, indentation. embossing or other I have only shown so much of the machine in the present drawings as will serve to illustrate the purpose and the operation of my new attachment.
This machine is designed to print a series of addresses upon a long transcript sheet, which is then taken to a machine where impressions are taken from the printing. The
transcript sheet is fed from a supply roll to the action of the type-writer and wound upon a receiving roll.
I have found that the variation in spacing inherent in friction feeds is such as to render it practically impossible to duplicate upon the impression machine the spacing or intermitting feed of the transcript sheet through the typewriter, and it is the purpose of this invention to provide an attachment for the type-writer which will be automatically actuated by the carriage movement to make a physical impression upon the transcript sheet; which impression will serve in cooperation with the mechanism of the impression machine, to duplicate the spacing of the transcript sheet in the type writer. As illustrated this physical impression is a punched hole, though it may be a phys ical change wrought in the transcript sheet.
The various features of the invention will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which I Figure l is a rear elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on line ana Fig. 1. 3 is a de- 29, 1902, on address- I tail, partly sectional view of the attachment. Fig. 4; is a top plan vie attachment. r
l is the type-writer frame having the usual carriage 2, and platen roll 3, the reciprocating and spacing mechanism not being shown.
t represents the supply roll upon which is wound the transcript sheet 5, which passes around the platen and is wound upon the receiving roll 6. I
7 is a bracket attached to the rear of frameof the carriage, it is provided with male and female punch members 8, 9, the spring actuated female member 9 beingadapted to be reciprocated vertically to en gage the die 8. t s
10 represents a resilient strip of metal be tween members 8 and 9, having an orifice I through which passes the die 8, the purpose of which strip is to free the sheet from the male punch member. is a lever 11 the upperendof which is adapted to engage the lower end of punch 9,
the lower end of said lever has an adjustable screw 12 adapted to be brought against an abutment or the frame of the machine when the carriage is shifted to travel whereby the punch is actuated. The transcript sheet passes between said punch members just before it engages the platen roll. By these means the transcript sheet is punched whenever the carriage engages the lever 11 against the frame.
.13 represents a guide bar over Whichthe paper. passes in order to be properly fed to l the punch.
I Having described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with a type writer frame, carriage, and platen roll, and fine for feeding a transcript sheet onto the plat roll, male and female punch members sup-- ported upon the carriage between which sa I transcript sheet passes, and means actual the initialend of its I script sheet passes, means for feeding said sheet onto the platen roll, and a lever eozeee it eifn'ocating one of said punch members, said impart an impression to the transcript sheet,- 19 lever being adapted to be engaged against an 1 substantially as described. abutment when the carriage is moved to i In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set punchthe said transcript sheet when a Igine is my hand. Written and the said roll is s aimed, su sta11- w -T y as described 1 CLEMENT LEE DOVNEL 3. In combination with a type-Writer, a Vitnesses: punch adapted to be automatically actuated OLIVER B. KAISER by the carriage at the end of its movement to LEO ODONNELL.
