TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 191 4. Divided and this application filed May 12,
To (1. 7 whom it may oncern 1 Be it known that we, STEPHEN P Alibl nan. JLRTEIUR W. SMITH, and Josnrn lnnLrs. citizens of the United States, and residents. respectively. of the borough of Brooklyn, county of King's, city and State of New York; borough of Manhattan, city, county. and State of New York, and Belle.- ville, county of Essex. and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specifica tion.
Our prec'nt invention relates to paper page or paper stop devices for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide new and improved devices of the character specified.
To the above and other ends our invention consistsin the features of construction, coinbinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the. claims.
The present application is a division of our prior application, Serial No. 742,786, filed January 18, 1913, and which has eventuated in Patent No. 1.071.612, granted August 26, 1-913, and while the principles of our present invention are applicable to typewriting machines generally the preferred embodiment of :SttMl invention as herein illustrated is especially adapted to the typewriting machine disclosed in said prior application.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating our invention, Figure 1 is a fragmentsry in sectionot' the upper part. of a typcwriting machine embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of our novel side; age and its mounting. Fig. 3 is a tran verse sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the dotted line 21in Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrow at said line. Fig. l is a sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the dotted line .s-- in Fig. 8 and looking in, the direction of the arrows at said line. 5 a fragmentary face view partly in section of our novel end gage and its mounting. Fig. 6 is a detached view of one of the elements of said end gage. As shown in F ig. l a carriage comprising end bars :26 and 2'. and cross bars 29 and 30 is adaptedto cooperate with fixed grooved I l l guide rails on the main frame of the Inachine. One of said guide rails 33 is shown fixed above the rear part 11 of the top plate of the machine, said guide rail being gunned to cooperate with the grooved carriage bar 29 through anti-friction rollers 31. Said carriage supports a rotary platen 236 provided with paper guiding devices comprising a deflector 106 which curves around the under side of said platen and a paper table 111 arranged at the rear side of the platen and suitably mounted on said can riage, the lower edge of said pap'ertable being contiguous to the upper edge of the de' tlectorlOG. The details of the carriage construction are fully disclosed in said prior application.
. side gage or guide of novel construction is provided for the sheet or sheets that are fed over the paper table 114 and around the platen 36. Said side gage as shown in Figs. 1 to 4. is mounted on-a grooved track.- way 124 suitably'secured to the left-hand table ll l near its lower side of the paper edge. Said track-way'extends horizontallv l along the paper table and receives a slide y b l 125 to which is suitably secured as 125 a spring plate by rivets 1'26, the upper and lower end portions whereof rcspcctrvely cooperate trictionally with the paper table 11% and de flector 106 so as to maintain the slide in adjusted positions along the track-way 124.. Suitably secured to the slide 125 as by being screwed at 125" to an car 125 on said slide is an upstanding side gage or guide proper (2r abutment 127. A, lateral pin 128 on this abutment or gage plate 127 is adapted to cooperate with a feed roll release lever 10% or other suitable relatively stationary part to prevent the slide from being detached at the left. from its guide way 124. The friction plate or device 12!) is of very thin flexile sheet metal and while it overlies or its upper and lower portions incline down toward the paper and closely hug these parts so that when paper. and particularlythat sort provided with key hole slots or" punches at its marcovers the guide way 124 and the slide 125 table and paper deflector gin, is introduced downward into the main carriage over the paper table 114, its edges will not be obstructed by the projecting up per edge or face of the part 124 but will be fill? groove 18% With which cooperate roll rs .185 mounted on the base plate 18L Said su'ocarriage supports paper guiding and con.- trolling devicescomprising, as appears in Fig. l a guide plate 224 slotted for the accommodation oi a feed roller 5533 which is pivotally supported on the sub-carriage and cooperates with a feed roller 238 to feed paper over the guide plate and across tl e printing face of the platen 86, said paper, indicated at 477, being superposed on the paper fed over the main platen. The snh-carriage paper in is contained or housecl' in a basketor receptacle 208 mounted on the sub-carriage and arranged below the same, its upper part being; in line with the paper guide plate 224. A flexible finger 209 cooperates with said basket to direct the paper downward into the lalzter; finger holding the paper lightly agninsl; the from; face oi said basket. The hash-eh provided with a side paper gage ll?) at its left-hand side and with an end SW31) de- .vice or gage which. is adjustahly mean 1 on the basket and extends from side to side thereof. I
; The end gage proper is shown in Figs. 1., 5 and 6 andeoniprises a squared rod or bar 215 which is arranged Within the basket and transversely thereof, being mo /a" mounted on a carrier or ball of spin. metal, the tendency of lhe bail being to be upward as will be understood "from "l. and 6 The hail is arranged outside the basket and its upturned. ends or are formed with holes which receive screw infles 217 projecting from die ends 05: the
as 215. Arranged within the basket loo Ward of the bar is a roller 2-18 provided with a rubber sheath 219, the ends of the roller being reduced as indicated at 52:20 and bearing in openings in the ears 2L6. Qatside the left ear the reduced end has socured to it a knurled finger button 221. Just inside of each ear the ends 221) have secured to them small toothed wheels, gears or sprockets 2232. These wheels are rotatably adjustable relatively to each other, and to this end one at least is set on the associatemednced end 220 by a set screw 220. The teeth of lhe sprockets 222 are inclined upper l 30 of thezew i when and extending along 4 of holes 22-3, one for each spi'oclz'n aid holes being punched or otherwise formed in the basket 8 near its edges. ye Earning ihe linger bull on the t .t are turned together and will cooperate "n she holes 9' 3 so ell'cct a pos hivefeec. or advance oi. the carrier on bail E216 and the end cop Ell), lihe construct-ion provid a 75 p" only opc 'aiging rack and conneclion between lj-lle end slop device and; iii; snpporn at each GILlLi OIE 'L-HO end. sl'l op device. lhe Iced of each end oil the stop device will liln-n'ejlioi'e be equal and skewing of the has? 215 is prevented. The stop device will he held in adjusced positions chiell'y my the friction between the body of the bail 31.63 and the face of tlie loaskci. The rubber roller218, 219 facilitates ease, snioohness and silence in the adjusting ope ion. The paper, it will be understood, is nitroduced into the be slteo and between it and the spring fingei" i209 and is adjusted 7i: side gage 210, being pressed downward into the basket until arrested by the step has ":VlllClJ. will not only give she proper i itial location endWis-e hutwill also so are or am. the sheet"; eoopera' nng with the some along its en'ln'e en or edg norlien so easel; s
