UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES G. TINSLEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN LINE-INDICATOR FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 293,687, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed May 29, 1883. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. TINSLEY, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Line-Indicators for Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for a type writing machine which will indicate to the operator the particular line upon which he is working, and especially point out the 'last line upon the page, so that the necessity of raising the carria-ge in order to know when the last'line is reached will be avoided. ,This object I accomplish by the attachment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my indicator. Fig. 2 is a front or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of a portion of a type-writing machine with my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 4 is a View of a portion of a feed-table carrying my indicator.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the impression-roller.
A is the pressure-roller, serving to hold the paper being printed in contact with the impression roller, so that the paper may be properly fed to space the lines by rotating the latter roller, the said rollers, with the usual means for rotating the impression-roller, constituting the line feeding mechanism.
B is the feed-table of a type-writing machine.
O is the sheet, which is shown in the position which it occupies when the last line upon the page is being printed.
The plate D is marked so as to indicate the position of the leading end of sheets of various lengths when the last line on said sheets is being printed, and is provided with a slot,
b, in which a pointer, d, is mounted. This pointer d is secured to the plate D by means of a set-screw, e, and when said set-screw is loosened the pointer can be moved up or down in the slot b to such position as will be reached by the leading endof the sheet whenthe last line thereon is being printed, in which position the pointer is secured by simply turning the set-screw e.
It will be observed that my indicator or graduated plate is adapted to be attached to the feed-table B of a type writing machine in an inclined position, thus permitting the sheet being printed to reston the upper surface of said plate, said upper surface facing the op erator, so that the end of the sheet relative to any of the indices on the graduated platemay easily be observed. Moreover, the adjustable pointer cl projects slightly above the upper surface of the plate, and when properly adjusted according to the size of the paper being printed said pointer will serve as a stop for the end of the sheet when the last line is reached, causing the sheet to wrinkle, and thus calling the attention of the operator to the fact that the page is completed.
It will be readily seen that by the use of the attachment described the necessity of raising the carriage in order to determine the position of the sheet is avoided. v
What I claim as my invention is' 1'. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with the line feeding mechanism and the feed-table, of an indicator or graduated plate adapted to support upon its upper surface the sheet of paper being printed, and means for removably securing said plate to said table, substantially as described.
2'. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with the line feeding mechanism and the feed table, of a graduated indicator plate adapted to be secured to said table in such position as to support the end of the sheet of paper being printed, and an adjustable pointer projecting above the upper surface of the said 1 Witnesses: v
