HEINRICH MLLER AND KARL SPEOKER, OF S'l. GALLEN, SWITZERLAND.
HOLDER FOB SHEETS OF ALL KINIDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27', 1908.
Application led June 15, 1908. Serial No. 438,652.
T o all whom i may concern:
Be it known that we, HEINRICH MLLER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at St. Gallen, in the Canton of St. Gallen, Republic of Switzerland, (whose post-office address is No. 14C St. lvlagnihalden, St. Gallen,) and KARL Srnoxnr., a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at St. Gallen, in the Canton of St. Gallen, Republic of Switzerland, (whose post-office address is No. 1S I-Iarfenberg, St. Gallen,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Sheets of all Kinds; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make` and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rIhe object of the invention is to provide a holder for sheets of all kinds of such novel and peculiar construction that the sheets may be grasped along the one or along the other edge or along both the edges of the pinching-bar, whereby the binding effect of the said bar may be increased when a pull is exerted on the sheets.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for sheets of all kinds provided with two supporting arms each of which having a fold into which the end of the counter-arm may be shifted.
This holder is suited for holding newspapers, but any other sheets z'. c. cloths of banners or flags, curtains, draperies, fabrics, etc. may be securely held by the same.
In the draw-ing Figure l is an elevation of a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side-view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line of Fig. l. Fig. et is an elevation of a modication of the holder. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line ail-c1 of Fig. 4. Fig. G is an elevation of another form of construction and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line rc2-402 of Fig. G.
The supporting bar c (Figs. l, 2 and 3) is provided with a hollow /L corresponding substantially to the cylindrical surface of the pinching-bar c, and also with a lateral ledge h1 overlapping the hollow L. This ledge /il partially overlaps also the pinchingbar c in the closed position and limits the swinging-movement of this bar. rlfhe hollow of the supporting bar c and the operative surface of the pinching-bar c are coated with a mixture consisting of glue and emerypowder, in order to increase the gripping force of the holder. The supporting-bar c provided with the usual eye c1 for hanging the holder and with the usual handle (not shown).
The main-portion of the pinching-bar c is of semi-circular` section (see Fig. 3), while the ends c1 of the bar c are cylindrical and provided with ribbed sockets c2 which serve as handles for actuating the pinching-bar c. The cylindrical end-portions of the bar c are placed in slots c3 of the supporting-bar and have eccentric pivots c3 carried by flat sockets c4 placed in slots of the supportingbar c.
rIhe sockets c4 permit the pinching-bar c not only to swing around the pivots c3 but also to be moved laterally, whereby the insertion of the sheets into the holder` is very much facilitated and the insertion of a large number of sheets therein permitted. The sockets c4 allow furthermore an easy bringing of the pinching-bar c into the proper position on the supporting-bar c.
It is obvious that the sheets may be brought into the holder from both sides and that they may be pinched at both longitudinal edges of the pinching-bar c, by being pressed simultaneously between one edge of the pinching-bar and the wall of the slot 7L, and between the other edge of the pinching-bar and ledge It. When bringing the sheets from the left side (ledge side) into the holder, a pull exerted on the sheets will increase the pinching effect the pinching-bar being pressed still more tightly against the bar c and the overlapping ledge. A single sheet will be held in the same tight manner as a series of sheets. In order to render more difficult the opening of the pinchingbar e and the stealing of the sheets, a winged-screw f is provided and may be pressed on the outer face of the upper cylindrical portion el of the pinching-bar c. An angle g is secured to the supporting-bar c and carries the nut z' for the winged screw f. For opening the holder, the winged screw f is lifted, whereupon the sheets may be removed or new sheets may be brought into the holder.
If the holder is used as a news-paper holder, two small metal-plates g are secured to the supporting-bar c. A metal-strip r having a fold r1 in the center is linked to each plate Q. lhen the holder is not used, the metal-strips r Ilie parallel to the bar c and the end of one strip r lies in the fold r1 of the other strip, so that the strips support themselves mutually. However when the holder is to be used, the strips r are turned away from the bar c, so that they are perpendicular to the same and serve as a support for the sheets clamped in the holder. instead of at the left side the overlapping ledge /il may also be at the right side of the holder.
The holder shown by Figs. al and 5 has a cylindrical supporting-bar c and four pinching bars e of the described construction, so that four sheets may be individually held in the holder. Fig. 5 shows the bars in different positions.
The modification shown by Figs. 6 and 7 is suited for holding curtains, draperies, fabrics, cloths of banners or iags and the like.
The supporting bar c has two eyes for hanging the holder, from which the sheet thangs down. The latter is pinched by the whole semi-circular surface of the bar e and between this bar and the overlapping ledge itl. The more the sheet is pulled or stretched the more the pinching-bar is turned into the pinching position and the sheet kept, so that it will be fully to pull out the sheet.
In curtains, banners etc. the pinching-bar is embedded in a suitable manner in the roller or shaft, so that the holding device does not hinder the use of the curtain etc. The nailing down of the curtains, banners etc. on rollers and shafts is overcome by the present holding device.
Two or more pinching-bars may be placed side by side on one fiat supporting bar. The sheet-support may also be movably secured to the supporting-bar by means of clasps.
The inner face of the overlapping-ledge may also be formed as a hollow.
