BOOK-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed January 11. 1907. Serial No. 351.878.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Furvxk J. Mitts, a citizen oi the United States, residing at irooklyn, in the county ol' l\'ings and State 01' New York, have invented certain new and uselul Improveim-nts in llookllips, of which the following is a spiarilication.
The present invention relates to an improved binding device [or holding the samples of wall paper commonly required for display purposes. It frequently becomes necessary to c1 angc the samplrs and to lake them out of the book form, and with the binding methods at present employed, this result can only be accomplisn ed by tearing them out or otherwise defacing the binding of he book.
The object of this invention has accordingly been to provide a. simple clip by means ol' which various samples can be securely held in book form, in such a manner that the dif desired.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the results, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application 01' the invention to a sample book. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the rear portion oi a book having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one 01' the binding clips detached.
Corresponding and like parts are rei'erred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same rel'erencc charactersv The binding device comprising the present inventimi is in the nature of a U-shaped clip 1. the two arms 2 of which fit upon opposite sides of a book it and have their rear portions connected by the cross piece l. The tree ends of the arms 2 are formed with an eye 5 through which a binding belt or pin 6 is passed, the said bolt extending through the book I in such a manner as to hold the leaves thereof securely in position. it will be readily apparent however that when the binding bolts 6 are removed, the various leaves can be interchanged and new leaves inserted or old leaves removed as found desirable. An intermediate portion oi the rent sheets can be interchanged as cross piece -;l is provided with an eye 7 for the attachment of a cord or handle as may be desired. As illustrated in tnc drawing, it will be readily apparent that; the clips i can be formed from a single piece of wire by coiling the same at an intermediate point to form the eye 7, bending the ends in opposite directions to form a cross piece. 4, and then bending the ends of the wire laterally to form arms 2, the extremities of the arms being bent back upon themselves to form the bolt receiving eyes 5.
Where the clip is employed in conni'wtion with telephone directories or similar books which it is desired to suspend in a position for ready access, a single one oi the clips may be secured to one corner thereoi and the eye 7 attached to a suspending cord or similar member. \l'ith books containing samples ol' wall paper however, it is preferable to employ a series 01' clips 1 and to con ncct the clips by a handle or supporting member such as the rod 8. This rod 8 extends through the eyes 7 of the various clips and is somewhat longer than the back of the book 3, the projecting ends of the rod being designed to engage with suitable supports between which the book is suspended. Longitudinal displacement of the rod 8 is prevented by means of t 'ansverse pins 9 extending therethrough.
Having thus described the invent ion, what is claimed as new is:
As a new article or manufacture the herein described binding device comprising a series of U-shaped clips 1. each of said clips being formed of a single piece of wire and comprising a cross piece l looped at. an intermediate point to torm a suspending eye 7. a pair of arms 2 formed by bending the ends of the cr as piece at angles thereto. the extremities oi the arms being returned upon themselves to lorm the eyes 5, a binding pin (3 received by the eyes 3 at the extremities of the arms. a rod 8 extending through the suspending eyes of the several clips 1, the two ends of the rod being designed to engage spaced supports, and transverse pins 1) extending through the rod 8 to prevent longitudinal slipping thereof.
in testimony whet-col l allix my signature in presence of two witness s FRANK .T. MILLS. [hat] \Vitnesses ln-ixrox' I l. \VouNuu, tlnoiau-z EDWARD RYAN.
