Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SCHULTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doily or Centerpiece Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention comprehends generally improvements in stretching devices and Y It is a more specific object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the parts are of novel construction and designed so as to be quickly arranged in a set-up position and when collapsed occupy only a minimum amount of space; to also provide wedges or pins for detachably connecting the doilies, et cetera, in the openings in the plates.

Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character with a view to compactness, and wherein the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efficiency high.

Other objects, as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims, forming a part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the stretcher showing a portion of a doily fastened thereto, A

Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the '"same, partly broken away showing the means for connecting` one of the plates to the adjacent post.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a pair of supporting posts 1 to which are detachably connected the end edges of supporting and receiving plates 2 as by fastening means generally designated 3.

n this instance the fastening means may be said to consist of elongated bolts 4 which are passed through suitably spaced trans-v verse openings 5 in the posts being provided with square heads 6 which are partially countersunk in the posts to prevent turning of the bolts ywhile the forwardly projecting threaded extremities of the bolts have received thereabou-t the adjacent end portion 7 of the adjacent plates 2 and in addition these threaded projecting portions are engaged by suitable clamping elements such as wing nutsS which act to releasably clamp the plates against the posts.

As is observed, each plate desirably consists of a rectangular body provided with a plurality of suitably arranged perforations 9 while arranged against the plates is a doily l() only a portion of which is shown, the doily being detachably connected to the plate subsequent to being washed and stretched as by wedges or pins l1 which press portions of the doily into the openings, the pins or wedges of course being arranged near the outer edge of the doily or centerpiece. Although it is preferred that two plates be employed and fastened with their adjacent edges in abutting relation, it is equally well apparent that one large plate may be used instead of the two plates, if desired. When two plates are used, however, the device will occupy only a minimum amount of space when notl in use.

Subsequent to the assembling of the device in the manner described in connecting or 'fastening of a doily thereto the device is arranged against the wall of a room to permit of the doily or centerpiece lying in a stretched condition.

It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especialiy defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired'to be secured by Letters Patent, is

l. A device of the character described including a pair of supporting members, a rcceiving plate detachably connected thereto and provided with a plurality of perforations, clamping members engageable with certain ot the pertorations.

2. A device of the character described including a pair of supporting posts having transverse openings extending` therethrough at suitably spaced intervals, elongated bolts arranged through the openings and having their heads partially countersunk therein, a pair of rectangular perforated receiving plates having their end portions provided with Isuitably spaced inwardly extending slots adapted to be arranged over the projecting portions of the bolts, the adjacent marginal edges of the plates being arranged in abutting relation, means engageable with the projecting portions of the bolts for releasably holding` the plates against the posts, and a plurality ot clamping` members engageable with certain ot the'perforations.
