Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application filed-June 13, 1906. Serial No. 321,529.
To all whomdt may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. .MORGAN, a citi-zen'of the UnitedStates, residing at Worcester, in the county of'Worcester and 'Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Producers, of whlch the followin 1s a specification,r accompanied by drawlngs forming-a part'of the same, in which- .Figure 1 isa central vertical sectional view through the as producer.
Fig. 2 represents a top view of a gas producer embodying my invention, with a portion of the top plate removed, and. Fig. 3 ris a detailed sectional view onV an enlarged scaleof the upper end of the air pipe and its surrounding socket.
Similar reference letters and figures refer to similar parts. in the different views.
-M-y invention relatestoan improved device for feeding air to the vconcentric twyer of Va suction or ducer located .at the upper end ofthe gas producing chamber, by which I1 accomplish increased ease of repairs combined with strength of construction, and. it consists in .the construction and arrangement of 'parts pointed out 1n as hereinafter described an Referring to the accompanyingv drawings 1 denotes-- a combustion or gas producing. chamber having side wallsAQ and/3, and avcover .which vconsists of a metal plate 4 provided withv manholes 5 having covers '6,
through which. manholes -5 the coal is supplied to the combustionI chamber 1. -At the center of the'plate 4 is zin-.opening 7 provided with" a supporting flange 8 upon which is helda removable twyer 9 of neclay' or other refractory material; Abovethe cover 4 is a top plate 10 supported 'on an annular vertical flange 11 of the gas producing chambernind provided with/a central openln 12 having a cover 13, of sufficient sizeto ena le the twyer 9 t'o be removedsthrough the opening 12 and i anew one inserted. The manholes 5 'also Y extend through openings in the top plate 10,v and the top plate 10 and covers 6 and 13 are provided at their edges' withv .de enclin s which ,are sand sealed yby a ayer c san \\as` 1s usual '1ngas producers `of'this class. v
- Between .the side walls and` 3 of the gas -producing chamber an annular 's ace-14 is' inclsed which communicates wit the bot- 'tom of the gas producing chamber 1 throu h .openings 1li, thereby aording apslssage or downdraft gasprothe gas generated in the chamber l-to -the gas outlet 1G.
The cover 4 closes the annular space -14 at the top, and is depressed to form an annular recess 17 provided with openings which receive the upper ends of a series of pipes 18 detachably held at their lower ends by screw threads-or-otherwise in a corresponding series of openings'in a plate 1 9 which closes the bottom of the annular space 14. The annular recess 17 is filled around thel ends of the pipe 18-witha layer of asbestos a covered byfga layer ofsand. Belowtheannular space 14 and the outer wall 3 is an annular water receptacle 2O communicating with the pipes 18 andjcontaining water at a predetermined level belowthe lower ends of the pipes 18, thereby allowing air to pass up.-
ward-ly through' the pipes into the space 21 .inclosed between they top plate 10 and the vcover 4, and asl the` inclosed air space -21 communicates lwith the twyer -9 a supply-cf.
air is furnished tothelcombustion-chamber 1. The operation of imy improved gas producer is'as follows:-The air enters below vthe outer wall 3, and passing over the water in the trough. 20-.ascend`s through the. pipes 18 to the space 21 .-betweenthe cover 4" and the 'top plate 10, from thence `-it passes through the twyer 9 to maintain the com# bustion of the coal in' the chamber' 1'.v I
against the innersides ofthe pipes 18 by vmean-s of .pipes 22,' andthe surplus water not takenv up by the current of air inthe form of steam is caught .by the water receptacle `20. This furnishes a supply yof steam totheascendingcurrenti of airwhich is also thoroughly heatedV asit passes' .through `the 18, which are entirely surrounded bythe fasin its passage from the er 1 tothe gas outlet 16.

similar annuarspace for the passa/geef the' heated gas. The passage vof thel air current through a series of pipes accom 'lishes the separaticn'of .the air. from'thej eatedfgas uit and Aalso increases the surface contact of the .air conduits. 'with the 1 At' the same timethepipce may beeasilyremoved and .replaced -om the top. 4I' also provide Ameans for supporting a `depending remov-4 'able' twyer at the top of the l,con'ibustiou- I lower v edge 25^of the producer.`
vchamber which may be readily replaced when necessary. 'The overlow'of water from the water receptacle is received by the ash pit123 inwhich a water level is maintained b an overflow pipe 24 vsuiicient to water seal/the Iclaim,
