by means of which a flexible member such as secured record can be firml and rapidly about a ackage, an \vhichpermits the release of-t e cord without difliculty.
A further ob'ect of the invention is to provide a device 0 the class described, by means of which a cord or the like which is passed in two directions about a packs e can be so curely held in ositioinand w 'ch glermits a The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and. particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in whic Figure l-is a perspective view showing a ackage with a cord passed thereabout and eld in position by means of my fastener;
Fig. 2 is a plan' view of the fastener; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form of the device.
Before proceeding to a more detailed ex lanation of m invention it should be unerstood that t e same can be usefully emloyed in connection with objects of all 'nds about which it is desired to pass a flexible member such as cord, twine and the like.
The fastener can be used in difi'erent sizes and in connection with corresponding-binding means of different thicknesses and len ths. The device is so arranged that the line of the binding medium is secured at one end thereto and 1s passed around upon all four sides'ot the object, the device presenting arms for holding the line suitably in position for the ur ose, and having means for removably E01 the opposite end of the line. The construction as. such that the line can be drawn 'astightly as necessary and has its free end securely held. notwithstanding that it is easily released by a pro er manipulation when it is desired to untie t e binding means.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I prefer to fashion the tie from material such as Wire of suitable stillness; consequently this form of the invention .has an elongated, bifurcated body which is fashioned from the wire by bending the latter upon itself to form'the legs 1 and 2. Near the junction of the legs the latter are parallel and comprise a constricted neck 3 to which-the end 4 ofthe line 5 can be easilyfastened by knotting or in any other suitable manner. The end of the leg 1 is laterally disposed and thereb is formed a concavity 6 for retaining the l1ne5 intermediate of the ends of the same to permit: the line to'be passed intwo directions about the object. Be o'nd'the concavity 6 thee nd of the le 1 is fbrmed into a laterally and upwardl is posed finger 7 for a purpose which wi appear hereinafter.
The end of the leg 2 is bent upon itself to form a tapered recess 8 which serves as a grip for the free end 9 of the line 5. At the same time the end of the leg'2' constitutes an arm 10 about which the line can be passed as will be shown hereinafter, the arm'being disposed for this purpose, away from the finger 7.
My invention is used as follows: The end 4 of the line is secured at the neck 3 of the bifurcated body. The device is held in position upon the package and the line is then assed around the same in one direction, bemg returned to the device and then being assed around the leg 1 at the concavity 6. n this way the direction of winding of the line can be eha ed and the latter is passed about the object in a direction at right angles to the first windin The end of the line 9 when it is returne to the device is assed around the finger 7 and the arm 10, t e extremity being slipped into the tapered recess 8, which firmly grips it and holds the line in osition and thus assists in forming a knot.
t will be understood that with this device the line can be drawn as taut as desired, and it can be casil released from the object by withdrawing t e end from the recess 8.
In the modified form of my inventionshown in Fig. 3, the tie fastener 'is cut, stamped or otherwise formed from suitable material such as sheet metal, and comprises a fiat body 11, having at one side similar I formed from ing means for hol curved and upwardly inclined arms 12, which correspond to the legs 1 and 2 of the bifurcated body She in F i 2, and serve to hold the line inte t 0% the ends and at the free end. Thaflaer end of the line is secured to the bodyfll by means of an opening l3, formed therein, the line being inserted in the opening by means of aslot 13 and provided with a knot at the opposite side to I prevent its withdrawal through the opening. The slot 13 connects the opening 13 and the i inner twig: of the body. Adjacent to one of the arms 12 of the body has at the edge a tapered recess 14, for gripping the free end of the line.
Having thus described my invention 1 \lilllll as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. tie fastener comprising a body havding a line at one end of the latter, a part formed to engage the' line intermediate the ends of the same to permit the direction of the line to be changed, and a second part having a tapered recess, for gripping the line near the free end thereof, sai first art adjacent to said second part having a nger, said finger being upwardly bent to permit the line to be looped thereabout before being inserted in said recess whereby a knot can be formed.
2. A tie fastener, comprising a body a bent elongated member, and having means for permanently holding a line near one end of the latter, a portion curved to engage the line intermediate the ends of the same, a finger adjacent to said curved portion, and an arm separated from said finger and having a tapered recess, said finger being upwardly bent to permit the line to be passed thereabout before bein inserted in said tapered recess, whereby a 0t can be formed, said arm being inclined away from said finger, said curved portion, said finger and said arm being substantially in alineinent.
3. A tie fastener, comprising a body having means for permanently holding a line near one end of the latter,a portion presenting a concavity ldapted to retain the line intermediate of the ends of the same, a laterally and upwardly disposed finger adjacent'to said portion, and an arm, adapted to have the line passed thereabout and presenting a tapered recess for gripping the line, said concavity, said finger, and said recess lying substantially in alinement transversely of the length of the fastener.
4. tie fastener, comprising an elongated body bent upon itself and ada ted to be secured at the bend, said body aving at one side of the bend a portion presenting a concavity adapted to retain t diateof the ends of the same and a. laterally and upwardly dis sed finger adjacent to said concavity, sai bod further havin at the other side oi the hen an arm adaptefi to have the line passed thereabout and presenting a tapered recess for gripping. the me. r
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
