WALTER G. LONG AND JOHN A. CAMPBELL, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
BOX-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, WALTER G. LONG and JOHN A. CAMPBELL, citizens of the United l States, residing at lVilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles, and more particularly to box fasteners, and has for an object to provide means whereby the cover of a box may be held locked to the body portion of the box in a manner that it cannot be removed to fraudulently change its contents without being detected by the pur- Chaser.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the speci'iic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a box showing the application of the present invention thereto, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the locking members, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the other of said locking members.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a box A of ordinary construction comprising the body portion B and the usual cover L therefor. At each end, the body portion is provided with a metallic member 10 preferably elongated and which comprises a vertically disposed portion 11, and an angularly disposed portion 12 arranged to lie with its upper edge in line with the upper edge of the end wall, as shown. The portion 11 at each end is provided with a barb 13 arranged for insertion through the end wall of the body portion, and which is bent upon itself outwardly of the end wall to lie in parallel spaced relation to the portion 1 1, and which serve to securely hold the member 10 to the box.
The cover O, at each end, is provided with a metallic member 14 each comprising a single length of sheet material having a depend ing portion 15 disposed inwardly of the end iiange of the cover, and a portion 16 disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

outwardly of the top portion of the cover, and which is passed through a passage 1'7 formed in the top, and which is afterwards bent upon itself to provide an outwardly projecting portion 18 arranged to lie in parallel spaced relation to the portion 16 and which is thus engaged beneath'the cover, as shown. The portion 16 of each member adjacent to its outer end is provided with lateral barbs 19 which are inserted through the top of the box as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and which are bent to lie in parallel spaced relation to the portion 16 to engage the portion 18 adjacent to its outer end whereby said member is securely locked in place. Each depending portion 15 of said member is stamped to form an outwardly directed tongue 20 which thus lies in spaced relation to the depending portion for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The cover upon its upper side has pasted thereupon a label 21 which is thus arranged to conceal the portion 16 of the members 14.
As stated, the portions 12 of the members 10 lie in spaced relation to the ends of the box, and it will thus be understood that upon attaching the cover to the box the depending portions 15 of the members 14 will be engaged between the portions 12 of the memf bers 10 and the end walls respectively of the box, and upon further downward movement of the cover the lower ends of the depending portions 15 of the members 14 will extend beneath the lower edges of the portions 11 of the members 10 whereby the tongues 2O carried by the members 15 will engage the edges of the portions 11 to securely hold the cover against upward movement. It will be seen that after the cover is engaged with the body portion of the box the end flanges of the cover will lie outwardly of the barbs 13 care ried by the members 10 and thus serve to hide the same as is obvious.
While the device is particularly adapted upon card board receptacles of ordinary construction, used principally for the vending of candies etc, it is apparent that the device will be found efficient and durable for locking the to s of shipping crates or similar receptacles.
hat is claimed is:
The combination with a receptacle, having metallic members having barbed portions engaged with the end walls of the receptacle, of metallic members carried by the cover of the receptacle and including portions arranged in parallel relation and engaged upon both ng' arranged to lie' outwardly of and @over most portions for engagement With the innerthe barbs carried by the iirst named mem-A most portions, each of said last named members When the cover is in its Closed position.- bers having a portion adjacent to the end In testimony whereof We afIiX our signer' 5 Wall of the cover depending' at right angles I tures, in presence of tWo Witnesses.-
