PACKAGE-TIE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1908.
Application led October 9, 1907. Seria1 No. 396,648.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknowu that I, CHARLES M. LANCAS- TER. a citizen of the United States, residing at Traverse City, in the county of Grrand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Package-Tight which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to package ties. and more particularly to that class designed for use by the Post Otlice Department in its railway mail service for holding various kinds of mail matter securely asscmbled.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which shall be simple and durable of construction, easy to manipulate. iuv the use of. which. thev hinder shall be so secured around a paci," c of mail matter or the like that its accif. ital. huiseliing or untying will he practically impossible and in which cutting' oi the hinder Will positively be prevented.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood. the saine co sts in the novel ronstriution and combinar" ai" parts, ot a "mail package tie. as will w .zarelinater t'uily described and claim.. l
ln the accompanying dra 35s. forming `which like eharmters of reference indicate"- rrespondingl pa1'ts:--l*`iguie lis a view in plan, partly in section, showing the manner in which the tie is assembled with a package of mail matter or the like. Fig. 2 is a View in vertical longitudinal section through the tic. Fig. is a top plan View. Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2 displayingr the manner in which the binder is disposed when the device is secured around the bundle.
Thetie comprises a pair of dished or concaved disks 1 and 2 that are connected at their centers by a buidel-receiving eyelet 3, the ends of which are upset against the outer faces of the two disks, in any preferred manner. These disks Will be made of sheet metal, of any preferred character, preteralily one that is non-oxidizable, and
for general purposes of utility sheet tin may be employed.
The binder 4- may be of cord of any preferred character and is held Within the eyelet by having its ends knotted. The walls of the eyelet will. by preference, be rounded. so that there Vwill be no danger of the cord being cut thereby.
As will be noted by reference to Fig. 4. the orifices in the disks through which the eyelet projects are of somewhat greater diameter than the eyelet, and further, that there is a suitable space between the opposed faces of the disks. The object of the first arrangement is to permit the disks to rock upon and slide longitudinally ot the eyelet, thus to adjust themselves to the binder, and that of the second arrangement is to provide sufficient space between the disks to allow the use ot a relatively heavy cord as a bindeiI It Wiii ne seen that by employing the tryo disks. that a continuous locking crotch is provided tor the binder7 so that in positioning the latter around the package of mail matter, no care need be observed Where it is inserted within the crotch, for the reason that all parts of the latter are equally effective for engaging and locking the cord, and. furthermore, the cord maybe drawn outward at any angle desired, thus to facilitate the tying of different shaped mail packa es.
gln the use of the tie,`the package of letters is grasped in the left hand with the address side down, and the plate or lock is placed uponI the back of the package with the binder beneath the same, The operator then passes the binder around and lengthwise of the package to the Aback thereof, then pinches it in the crotch, then passes the cord transversely around the package to the back, the thumb being still pressed upon the lock, and then again forced into the crotch by which it is securely locked. The binder is removed simply by releasing it from' en-4 gagement with the lock.
It Will be seen from the yforegoing descripeach other,
tion that although the improvements herein defined are simple in character, that they will coperate in the production of a thoroughly etcient device, and one that will be rehable for the purposes had in View.
I claim A package tie, comprising a pair of concave disks with their convex Sides opposite and an eyelet connecting said disks, and on which they are spaced apart, 10 and slidably mounted, and adapted to rock. In testimony that I .claim the fore oing as my own, I have hereto aixed my s1gnature in the presence of two witnesses.
