COMBINED TIE AND RAIL-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 18, 1914. Serial No. 819,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL KAosMARIx, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Bunola, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ties and Rail-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined tie and rail clamp, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for not only supporting a track rail but for further clamping the track rail thereto to prevent lateral movement of the rail with respect to the tie.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a combined tie and rail clamp, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efiicient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifica tions can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of a tie provided with a rail clamp in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation of the tie and clamp with respect to a track rail, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the tie illustrating the clamp with respect to the track rail.
The tie is provided with a clamp at each end, but only one end of the tie is illustrated and the description of the said end will apply to both ends of the tie.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a hollow metallic tie body which is rectangular in cross section and has provided near each end a bracing web 2, the latter being positioned within the tie body and is formed integral therewith. At each end of the tie body an outer clamp 8 is formed integral with the upper face 45* of the tie body 1 and the said outer clamp is adapted to engage the lower face of the head, one side of the web and one side of the rail base 6 of the track rail. The outer clamp 3 is of the same width as the width of the tie body 1. The base 6 of the track rail is adapted to be seated upon the upper face 4 of the tie body 1 and to have one side overlapped by the clamp 3.
The top of the tie body is provided with a narrow longitudinal slot 7 and is furthermore provided with a pocket 8 positioned. 1n alinement with the web 2 and inwardly with respect to the slot 7. The slot 7 is so positioned that the base 6 of the track rail PIOJBCtS over one end thereof. Extending through the slot 7 is a neck 9 of a removable inner rail clamp 10, the latter abuts against and overlaps the base 6 as well as engaging the web 5 and head 4 of the track rail. The neck 9 of the clamp 10 is formed with a cross head 11 adapted when the clamp 10 is in engagement with the track rail to be positioned below the inner face of the top of the tie body and as said cross head 11 18 of greater length than the width of the slot 7, it is obvious that the cross head 11 prevents vertical movement of the clamp 10 and further detachably connects said clamp 10 to the tie body.
Pivoted upon the pin 12, which extends transversely of the pocket 8 is one end of a curved retaining member 13, which is adapted to be swung into the slot 7 and engage the neck 9 whereby the clamp 10 will be maintained in engagement with the track rail. The clamp 10 is of less width than the width of the tie body.
To remove the clamp 10 from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the member 13 is swung clear of the slot i, the clamp 10 shifted toward the inner end of the slot 7 after which the neck 9 is turned and the clamp 10 can be disconnected from the tie body 1.
WVhat I claim is 1. A combined tie and rail clamp comprising a hollow tie body provided at one end with a vertically disposed integral outer rail clamp capable of overlapping one side of a rail base and further capable of abutting against the head and web of a track rail, said body having its top formed with a longitudinally extending slot and a pocket inwardly with respect to the slot, a removable inner rail clamp adapted to be positioned against the track rail and provided with a neck extending through said slot and further having a cross head arranged below the lower face of the top of the tie body, and means pivotally connected in said pocket and capable of being swung into said slot to (engage said neck for maintaining the inner clamp in position.
2. A combined tie and rail clamp comprising a hollow tie body provided at one end with a vertically disposed integral outer rail clamp capable of overlapping oneside of a rail base and further capable of abutting against the head and web of a track rail, said body having its top formed with a 1ongitudinally extending slot and a pocket inwardly with respect to the slot, a removable inner rail clamp adapted to be positioned against a track rail and provided with a neck extending through said slot and further having a cross head arranged below the lower face of the top of the tie body, means pivotally connected in said pocket and capable of being swung into said slot to engage said neck for maintaining the inner clam in position, said inner clamp of less lengt than said outer clamp, and said outer clamp being of the same width as the width of the tie body.
