Description

J. BAUMGARTEN. PROTECTOR FOR TELEPHONE TRANSMITTEES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.18,190B.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
. anventoz @51 M alto mango JOSEF BAUMGARTEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PROTECTOR FOB TELEPHONE-TRANSMITTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application filed January 18, 1908. Serial No. 411,419.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnr BAUMGARTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Telephone-Transmitters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to protectors for telephone transmitters, and has particular reference to a protector adapted to be carried about and used to revent contagion when talking through a te ephone transmitter.
The invention comprises a collapsible receptacle of such form as to fit within the telephone transmitter when expanded, and when collapsed to be contained within a flat casing suitable for carrying in a pocket.
The invention will be more fully understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the collapsible form applied to a telephone; and Fig. 2 shows the same form in collapsed condition.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the body portion or ring 1 is provided with an iii-turned flange 9 forming an opening 10, and attached to the body portion 1 is a cone 11 composed of fabric and carrying across its end the paper or other suitable diaphragm 12. This fabric cone is made collapsible and is provided with a spring 13 held in lugs 14 for expanding it when the cover 15 is opened, the cover 15 being pivoted at one corner in the manner before described. If desired, a second cover can be used to cover the opening 10 though ordinarily this will not be necessary, inasmuch as the cover 15 will protect the diaphragm 12 when collapsed. In case the diaphragm should be broken, a new one can easily be substituted. The manner of use of this form of the invention will be manifest from Fig. 1, which shows the cone expanded and held on the telephone transmitter either by fitting over it, or in proximity thereto by means of the cover 15, pivoted at 6.
I am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to fasten fiat pieces of paper over telephone transmitters, and also that it has been proposed to insert the paper cones within the transmitter, but my invention differs from these in that it is portable, and is to be held by the user over the end of the transmitter only when he is using it, which will be only a very small proportion of the time, at other times the protector being collapsed and shut up within the case and protected from dust and other deteriorating influences.
Modifications in the specific manner of constructing the device may be made without de arting from the scope of the invention.
Iaving thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A protector for telephone transmitters comprising a cylindrical body portion, a collapsible funnel of flexible material mounted therein and adapted to fit a telephone transmitter, a diaphragm closing one end of the funnel, and a retaining means for holding the funnel collapsed and protecting the diaphragm when not in use.
2. A protector for telephone transmitters com rising a cylindrical body portion, a collapslble fabric funnel mounted therein and adapted to fit a telephone transmitter, a diaphragm closing one end of the funnel, and retaining means pivoted on the body portion for holding the funnel collapsed and protecting the diaphragm when not in use.
3. A telephone protector comprising a cylindrical body portion having an inwardly extending flange at one end, a fabric funnel having a coiled expanding spring secured to said body portion within said flange, a diaphragm closing one end of the funnel, and a cover pivoted on said body portion and adapted to close one end thereof and hold the sprin under compression whereby to protect the diaphragm.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
J OSEF BAUMGARTEN.
