WINDOW-SCREEN.
Specification of Letters-Patent.
Patented cot-Leo, 1908.
Application filed December a, 1907. Serial No. 405,352.
. 'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CARNEY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at High Falls, in the county of Ulster and State of- New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W indow-Screens, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable thosc'skill ed in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to window screens; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class, the width of which may be adjusted, whereby the screen may be used in window frames of. different widths; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class s ecilied constructed as hereinafter describe and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of whichthe accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my im rovement are designated by suitable re erence characters in each of the views, and in whioh;-
Figure l is a side or plan view-of my imroved screen, Fig. 2- a partial section on the inc 2, 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. a section'on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 a section on the line 4, 4 of Fig. 1, and;-Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention I provide two similar frame members a comprisin parallel side portions connected by on porrate frames-a are placedtogether so as to overlap each other. The end portions a of the separateframes a are composed of two separate similar parts secured, together as shown in Fig. 4, and the thickness of said end portions of the separate frames is the same as the thickness of the side portions a of said frames where they overlap. The side portions (1 of'the separate frames a are also connected ad acent to their f rec endsby transverse metal strips 1) which are Lshaped' in cross section and composed of strips of metal folded longitudinally, and the side portions a of the separate frames a are provided in their adjacent faces with wide longitudinal grooves c m which are placed strips d which fill said groove, and the outer portions of the side members a of the separate frames a are provided with grooves e-which are iii-shaped in cross section and which open through. the inner face of said portions c and the strips f) provided with angle members 5 whichfit'in and are movable in the groove 6.
Secured in each of the frames as and between the separate(parts of the end portions e of said frame, an between the main parts of the side portions a thereof and the striped are screens f com osed of wirelnesh or other suitable materia and connected with the trans verse metal strip b of one of the frames a are rods 9 which are also connected with the end portion a of said frame, and which pass through the flange portion of the transverse strip 5 of the other frame a as shown at g, and a rod'h is connected with the transverse strip 6 of the other frame and with the corresponding end portion a of said frame and passes throughthe transverse strip 1) of the other frame a as shown at b It will be understood, of course, that by grasping the end ortions a of the separate frames at, the sai frames may be ad usted laterally to any desired extent, and in this manner my improved screen may be adapted for use in connectionwith window frames of dilferent transverse widths. It will also be understood that my improved screen is used in connection with window frames and sashes in the usual manner, and is usually I placed under the bottom sash which is raised r this purpose.
In Fig. 4 l have shown a modification in which I emplo Y a separate transverse strip or plate i'with w iich the end portionsb of the transverse metal strips 6 are connected, and these strips or plates 7. are placed between the separate parts of the side portions a of the main frame and have outer end angle members i movable in the slots 6, and the in r end portions thereof are also bent at an angle as shown at i and provided with apertures i through which the parts I) ofthe transverse strips b are passed and the parts I) and i are,
or maybe, secured together in any desired manner, and in Fig. 4 I have shown a nail i used for this purpose, and said nail or nails also serve to aid in securing the parts (I of the side portions a" of the frames 0. to said side portions.
By employing the transverse L-shaped strips 6 as parts of the separate frames a and the rods 9 in the manner described, I provide lar frames each composed 0 paral el side portions connected by an end member, the side portions of one frame overlapping the corresponding portions of the other frame, and screen material secured in the said frames,
- the side portions of said frames being also provided with longitudinal grooves whichopen inwardly and which are L-shaped in cross section, and said side ortions of said frames being also connecte' near their free ends by transverse strips provided at their ends with. L-shaped parts movable in said grooves.
2. A window screen comprising two similar frames composed of parallel overlapping side portions connected by end members, the end members being composed of separate arts securedtogether, and the side portions eing provided in their ad'acent faces with longitudinal grooves in w ich are secured separate strips, screen material secured in the said frames between the separate parts thereof, said side portions of said frames being also provided near their free ends with transverse strips having end members which pass between the separate parts of the side portions of said frames and are provided at their outer ends with L-shaped parts movable in longitudinal L-shaped grooves formed in the side portions of the said frames.
3. A window screen comprising two similar frames composed of parallel overlapping side portions connected by end members, the 40 end members being composed of separate parts secured together, and the side portions being provided in their adjacent faces with longltudinal grooves in which are secured separate strips, screen material secured in the said frames between the separate parts thereof, said side portions of said frames being also provided near their free ends with transverse strips having end members which pass between the separate parts of the side portions of said frames and are provided at their outer ends with L-shaped parts movable in longitudinal L-shaped grooves formed in the side portions of the said frames, said transverse strips being L-shaped in cross section and each frame being rovided with a rod or rods connected with t e end'members said rod or rods of one frame being passed through the transverse strip of the other frame. v
In testlmony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of the subscribing witnesses this 25 day of November 1907.
EDWARD OARNEY.
