This invention appertains to improvements in window screens generally, and more particularly to an extensible type thereof for its adjustable emplacement within a sash opening of a window casing. 7
An object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified construction of extensible window screen which affords greater proof against the passage of flies or other insects through the overlapping portions of the screen fabric and provides means to interconnect the relatively movable screen sections in a manner that the sections are sustained in a more accu rate alignment during the relative sliding movement of adjustment of the same to fully close the sash opening of the window casing.
Another object of the invention has to do with an improved and novel construction of the top and bottom members or rails and the inner end members of the frames of the relatively movable screen sections, the latter members embodying the aforesaid interconnecting means which, in addition to acting to sustain the screen sections in accurate alignment, engage with the top and bottom members or rails in a manner to prevent passage of flies or other insects therebetween.
With these and other objects and advantages of equal importance, the invention resides in the certain new and useful combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of the improved window screen, in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a top edge view;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary, horizontal section, taken through the line 33 on Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4 is an enlarged, fragmentary, perspective view, showing the horizontal frame members or rails sustained in close sliding contact by the hooked ends of the inner end members and the flush fit of the latter with the higher outer sides of the grooves in the upper sides of the horizontal frame members or rails;
Figure 5 is an enlarged, fragmentary, vertical section, taken through the line 55 on Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure 6 is an enlarged, fragmentary, perspective view, showing the hook formation at an end of one of the inner end members of the screen frame sections.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate the two relatively adjustable sections of the extensible window screen, each section comprising a frame made up of an outer vertical end member, top and bottom horizontal members or rails, and an inner vertical end member, of which only the top members or rails H), the inner end members [8, and the screen fabric, indicated at C, of the two screen sections, are shown.
In carrying out the objects and purposes of the invention, each of the horizontal frame members or rails H! is preferably in the nature of a flat strip of wood, e. g., plywood, having its top or outer and bottom or inner edges longitudinally grooved, so as to be substantially H-shaped in cross-section; the outer grooves being indicated at I2 and the inner grooves at M, the latter grooves of both the top and bottom members or rails having complemental edges of the screen fabric 0 secured therein. The free end of each of the frame members or rails I0 is vertically slotted, as at I6, for purposes which will presently appear. I
As best shown in Figures 3, 5, and 6, each of the inner end members I8 is made from a length of sheet metal which is folded upon itself along its longitudinal center and is then likewise bent to provide right angularly disposed portions or flanges 2|] and 22; the portion or flange Ell being disposed parallel to the face of the screen fabric C, of the screen section of which it is a part, for the securement of the inner edge of the latter between the folds thereof, and the portion or flange 22 projecting at right angles to and into substantial contact with the face of the screen fabric C of the opposite screen section.
After being folded upon itself, each of the inner end members l8 are cut transversely, as at 24, for substantially one half of its width, and the angularly bent portion or flange 22 terminate at these points so that the cut ends thereof substantially contact the inner edges of the top and bottom members or rails ll] of the opposite screen section, thus closing off any possible passage of flies or other insects therebetween. Beyond the cuts 24, of each of the inner end members 18, for a distance slightly less than the height of a frame member or rail l0, one side 20' of the portion or flange 20 is cut off, as at 26, so that the other side 20" extended portions 28 which are angularly bent to provide hook-like elements 30, the free ends of which are inturned and parallel the portions 28.
In assembly, the extended portions 28, of the inner end frame members l8, are engaged in the slots I5 of the top and bottom frame members or rails ID of the screen sections of which they are a part, while the hook elements 30, of the inner end frame member of one of the screen sections, e. g., the screen section A, are engaged in the outer rooves [2 of the top and bottom frame members or rails ID of the screen section B; and the hook elements 30, of the inner end, frame member 3, of the screen section B are likewise engaged in the outer grooves l2 of the top and bottom frame members or rails H] of the screen section A, thus firmly interconnecting the two screen sections and securing the members or rails thereof in close sliding contact. With the screen sections A and B thus interconnected, it is to be noted that the cut ends of the portions or flanges 22, of the inner end frame members I 8, have close fit with the opposed edges of the top and bottom frame members or rails Iii, so that passage of flies and insects therebetween is prevented, just as the portions or flanges 22 themselves closely contact the faces of the screen fabric to the same end.
Having thus fully described my invention, it is obvious that, while extensible window screens are generally old in the prior art, the specific features of construction of the top and bottom members or rails 40 and of the inner vertical end members N3, of the frames of the two relatively movable screen sections, and the cooperation obtaining therebetween, as herein set forth, constitutes a substantial improvement over allknown window screens of this type, in that the screen sections are maintained in accurate alignment during adjustment and all points of otherwise possible ingress of flies and insects are blocked.
What I claim is:
In an extensible window screen, a pair of relatively adjustable overlapping sections including top, bottom and inner end frame members and screen fabric on the same, said top and bottom frame members being constituted in flat, relatively thin, strips of wood, each having grooves extending lengthwise of the top and bottom edges thereof, said screen fabric havin its complemental edges secured in the opposed grooves of said top and bottom frame members, each of said inner end frame members each having the form of a folded length of sheet metal bent lengthwise intermediate its ends to provide right angularly disposed portions, one of which parallels the face of the screen fabric and embraces the edge of the same and the other is inturned to have contact with the face of the screen fabric on the opposite screen section, and a U-shaped element formed at the ends of the said one angular portion to the full width of the strip, the inner free ends of said. top and bottom members being vertically slotted in line with the grooves thereof for the passage therethrough'of the connected portion of said U-shaped elements, the latter elements of the inner frame member of one screen section engaging with the outer grooves of the top and bottom frame members of the other screen section, the adjacent side walls of the outer grooves of the top and bottom members of the screen sections being of a lesser height than the other sides thereof to seat the U-shaped elements flush with the edges of said other walls, so that the latter edges will uniformly contact the opposed sides of the window opening when the screen is in place.
