IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHABLE FIXTURE `PoR cAsTERs.
` VThe Schedule `referred. to in these Letterav Patent and making pari: of the same.
Be it known that LALEXANDER C. TwmI'NG, of the city and 'county ofvNewHavemland State of Gonnecticut, have invented a new and improved Detaclb' able Fixture, being a modeof readily attaching and description of my said improvement, reference being In the drawing, the three middle ligures, marked respectively elevation, Y face, and endviewf and The figures on the left hand and on, the right merely` exhibit variations and equivalents.
Let b b bbe a plate or socket, into whose bore the shaft or pintle p p is to be Vfixed, but yet to be easily detachable. N f i i Let the socket spread at one extremity, as shown by the rim or collar c c c, and let a slot, m It k z, be sunk in its face crossw-ise of the bore, `(see face,) to
in it, and bent around toclasp c c both right andleft. This will hold the strip or wire, and form a spring of rlhe springis concave,`as at a, in both branches to by spreading apart the branches. For this purpose, supposing the shaft when attached tohave a shoulder, j j, beneath the spring, itmust' Now, it' s were a shoulder, thefshaft would not collie degree of force for the pull will be regulated by the sharpness or suddenness of theI It is a valuable propel-typt' in.; that in consequence comparatively strong spring. But to prevent its closobstruct ,the shafts turning, the small knobs la ki are thus leaving only the balance of tlfe spread Vto be 'made by s vwhen pushed in, as before described.
But k may be dispensed with, if the straight seg` lserve the claim i'or a ments of Vthe spring are in contact and receive each other-s tension, so as to keep one another mutually apart. l p
The figures on the right show lm 'n s and It attached, not in a slot, but outside the facet c ot a ridgcd socket, called a ridge-bed in my patent therefor. The corresponding figures on the left have fm. n a
fastened at the upper extremity of b bk b, or iu'some other portion of its extent, as the figures sufficiently show. It' insteadA of k the bend my of the strip should be sharpened, n. and nV would approach, and might even lap past one another. If, in addition, 5 is permanently bent to an open form,it is obvious that when m a z is 4 fastened in place on c c, the haunches of the curves a: and 1/ will pressand restrain one another to such an extent that` p p may pass between without resistance or friction, whether into bb or ont of it, except as the swell or enlargement s shall offer resistance.
n z, instead otk, I do not claim at present, but re` patent to he applied for hereafter. Y, p L
The merit and novelty of the combinationherein described for obtaining ammeasnred resistance to the withdrawal of 11 p from b b b are owing chiefly tothe attachment of m `n z to b b in a manner to traverse the bore of the latter, near its circumference, by a twofold spring inclosing, or capable of inclosing, p1). Certain other particulars are, however, Aof no slight importance. Such is the knob L, or its tantamount formation by the spring itself; such also is the swell or enlargement s, instead of a channel in p p, which tends to weaken the latter. But the two branches of fm. a z may be separate strips or wires, and they may be formed straight, or sloping regularly from the bore to the extremity ofthe rim, or of yet other forms, and they may be attached byjnserting their ends into holes in ajc or b bor in any other known way; or one branch by itself mayserve in certain cases.
v What fI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following: ,i Y
1. l claim the combination of a'plateor socket with the elastic strip, wire, or branches traversing or skirting the bore, and attached, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Also, the knob la in `the same combination.
1 ,3. Also, the swell s oft-he shaft or pintle in the same combination; Y f ALEXRC. TWINING.
