JOSEPH FEASTER VAN HORN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
Application filed September 13, 1907. Serial N 0. 392,639;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn: FEASTER VAN HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia,
and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedwhen desired, be used as a hammock.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, inwhich' Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved folding stand showing it adjusted for use. Fig. 2, an end view thereof. Fig. 3, a plan view. Fig. 4, a side elevation of the stand when folded. Fig. 5, a plan view of the stand in its folded position.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the legs of the stand, which are here shown as made of metal rods so bent as to have the general form of an X, and to these legs are pivoted the cross bars B and B, which are pivoted together as indicated at O, and the upper ends of these bars have the connecting links D and D attached thereto by the thumb bolts E and E. The links D and D are pivoted to the legs A, as indicated at F, thus in conjunction with the cross bars B and B forming toggle joints, and when adjusted to the position shown in Fig. l a stiff and rigid frame is provided holding the legs in an upright position, but when it is desired to fold the frame it is only necessary to unclamp the thumb screws E and E and swing these joints downward, thereby bringing the cross bars B and 13 approximately parallel, and when the thumb screws are again tightened the stand will be held in its folded position.
Where the stand is to be used for an ironing or like board, I provide the points G, which project from the upper rails of the legs, and which will become slightly embedded in the underside of the board, thus preventing it from slipping when being used.
While my invention is especially adapted for use in connection with ironing boards, it is obvious that it may be used for various other purposes such as supporting a dress makers cutting board, an ordinary table top, or when desired it may be made of sufficient size and strength to be used as a hammock frame, and as the cross bars and links form a positive brace the frame will stand considerable strain for this purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and useful, is
A folding stand consisting of two leg frames, each made of a metal rod bent in the form of an X, two cross barseach pivoted to one of the leg frames, said bars being pivoted to each other, two links each pivoted to one of the leg frames, thumb screws connecting the links with the cross bars and points projecting from the top rails of the leg frames, as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH FEASTER VAN HORN.
