To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES P. Hn'rrox, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear. and exact description of the same. and which said drawings constitute part of this specification. and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in buckles and particularly to buckles for use in connection with leather straps. such as harness buckles. trunk strap buckles, skate strap buckles and buckles for a variety of purposes where itis desirable to clamp the strap rather than to unch it and have a tongue to pass througi such punctures, the object being a simple arran cment of parts whereby the straps may be orcibly clamped and consequently held against slipping; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In carrying out my invention I employ a rectangular frame comprising sides 2-, ends 4, 5, and cross-bars 6, 7 and S, the ends 4, 5. being raised above the plane of the bars 6. 7 and S. The plate is also formed on opposite sidm with ears 9, 10, and pivoted to t e ears is a lever 11 having rearwardly projecting finger pieces 12 and forwardly extending arms 13. Pivoted to these arms is a clamp 11 the forward bar 15 of which is arran ed arallel to the forward and bar 4 and note ied or-sliding en agement with the sides 2, 3 of the frame, an as the clamp is connected to the lever by pintles independent of the pintles by which the lever is connected with the cars, it follows that when the lever is turned the clamp will be given a cam action and forced toward or from the bar 4, being forced toward the bar when the lever is turned down. and away from the bar when the lever is turned up. The fixed end 16 of the strap is looped over the bar 8 passii below the bar 5 while the running end 17 o the strap passes upward between the bars 4 and 6 and is held against the bar 4 by the clamp late 15. Owing to the cam arrangement tie parts will yield slightly so as to hold straps of varying thicknesses, althou h it will be understood, of course, that the length of the arms ll of the clamp and the point at which it will be hinged to the lever will depend upon the thickness of the strap with w iich the buckle is to be used. T hese parts can be readily struck up from metal, easily assembled and is most effective in use.

I claim:

1. A buckle comprising a plate having end bars and upwardly pro ectmg cars, a lever pivoted to said cars and having forwardly extending arms. a clamp pivoted to said arms and having a clam ing )late having sliding engagement with t me sir cs of the frame and adapted to be moved toward and from the forward bar. substantially as described.

2. The herein described buckle comprising a frame having end bars and intermediate transverse bars. the end bars arranged in a plane above the intermediate bars. a plate also fomied with upwardly extending ears, a lever pivoted in said cars and having forwardly projecting arms. a clamp pivoted to the arms of the lever and formed with a clamping plate having sliding en agement with the sides of the frame and at aptcd to be moved toward and from the forward bar, substantially as described.
