Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BRAD- srnxw, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1i/Vaterbuiy, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buckles, of which the following is a specification. f
My invention relates to buckles for webbing and its object is to provide a buckle of this character which is constructed so that the fixed end of `the webbing may be fastened to the back thereof without resorting to the expedient of sewing or stitching.
I attain this object in the preferred embodiments of my invention set forth in the following description and accompanying drawing in which like reference characters refer -to corresponding parts.

My buckle generally comprises the frame or back A and thelever B. The back A is suitably blanked and struck up out of sheet metal to form the back proper Q, having the forwardly turned side ears 3, 3 which latter are perforated at 4, l. The lever B. is also suitably blanked and struck up out of sheet metal to form the front portion or shield 5, the web-engaging or clamping edge 6 and the laterally projecting trunnions 7, 7 which are journaled in thek perforations 4, l 'to form a pivotal connection between the lever and the back. The body portion of the back 2 is sheared and depressed to one side of the pivotal points, or to be `more exact below the saine, to form the continuous odset por tion or wall 8 having a top edge 9 and a bottom edge 10 and leaving' corresponding edges 11 and l2 respectively on the body of theback. The shearing and depressing of the back to form this offset portion leaves Specification of Letters Patent.

a depression in the opposite face of the back and a top opening between the edges 9v of the webbing C is passed through thev opening formed between the edge 9 of the offset portion and the corresponding edge ll of the back into the depression or vertical passage in back of the wall 8 and preferably entirely through the same passing out through the opposite opening between the opposite edge l0 of the offset portion and the corresponding edge 12 of the back.
Since the metal along one side of the openl ings is offset or raised out of the plane of the back it will readily respond to the pressure of swaging tools and thereby can be closed on the webbing when pressed toward the back. The extremity la of the' webbing C being thus securely fastened to the back of the buckle the running portion is looped downwardly around one of the edges on the back, preferably the edge 9, and is then passed upwardly between the back and the open lever which latter may be shut down to lock the webbing between the edges 6 and the back 2. The buckle thus strung forms an adjustable loop in the webbing which carries the cast off member D. Besides the method of Stringing above described it is obvious that my buckle is susceptible to all of the well known methods of Stringing wherein the webbing is swaged to the back.
It should be observed that in the particular form of my invention disclosed herein the vertical passage behind the wall offers a quick method of sti-inging and that the end of the webbing is gripped by a double pair of edges thereby making the fastening means very secure. 0f course it is not necessary that the back should be provided with two openings in order to form the offset since the offset may be formed in other ways, the essential feature being that the back should be provided with an opening having the metal along one'of its sides offset to permit the passage of the webbing which oifsetis located to one side of the pivotal connection so that it is accessible to swaging tools after the back and lever members are assembled.
Referring to the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the back D is suitably blanked and struck up out of a sheet metal plate to form the back proper 13 having the forwardly turned side ears 14, 14 which latter are perforated at 15, 15. The lever E y1s also suitably .blanked and struck up out of sheet metal to form they front portion 16, the
web-engaging edge 17 and the laterally projecting trunnions one of which is shown at 18. The body portion of the back is sheared and depressed below the pivotal connection to form an offset portion 19 between the edge 20 of which and the corresponding edge of the back 21 is an opening. A depression is thus formed in the front face of the back above the opening as shown in Fig. 6, One extremity 7c of the webbing C is inserted upwardly from rear to front through the opening into the depression formed in the back. The edges 2O and 21 are then closed yon the extremity 7c by suitable swaging tools to permanently pinch or grip the webbing between them. The webbing C having its extremity 7c thus fastened between the edges 2O and 21 is looped downwardly and then passed upwardly between the back D and the lever E which latter may be shut down to lock the webbing between the edge 17 and the back 13. v It should be noticed that during the operationof closing the edges 2O and 21 on the webbing the extremity 7c is pocketed by the depression formed in the face of the back so that it does not interfere with the action of the swaging tools. It should be further noticed that when the buckle is webbed the extremity la being seated in the depression is covered by the webbing which passes over it, thereby eliminating the disadvantages incident to an exposed end. In this form of my invention the holding of the webbing be tween the edges 20 and 21 is facilitated by the teeth or serrations and the punching of the circular orifices at the extremities of the edges during the shearing operation relieves the metal of considerable strain when the body portion of the back is depressed in forming the offset portion.
Referringto the modification shown Vin Figs. 8 and 9 the back 22 is sheared and depressed below the pivotal connection to form the offset portion 23 between the edge 24 of which and the corresponding edge 25 of the back is an opening. The metal along the sides of this opening is adapted to beclosed on the webbing in the same manner as in the preceding modification. Thebuckle may be strung so that the webbing passes over the back as shown in Figv 8, producing what is known in the trade as the rustless effect. In' this form of my invention the lever F is journaled to swing over the top of the back when in its closed position after the manner of buckles of the so called Pellar type.
It is obvious from the above disclosures that the buckle may be strung in various ways, the essential featurebeing that the extremity ofthe webbing shall not interfere with the action of the swaging tools when attaching the same to the' buckle.
This application is a continuation of my prior application for buckles filed November 17, 1911, Serial No. 660826.
While the above disclosures embody the preferred forms of my invention yet it is to bev understood that the same is susceptible to Asuch modification as may fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Y Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A buckle comprising a back member sheared and depressed to form an opening and a continuous offset portion, and a lever member pivoted to said back member to one side of said offset portion, the said back member being formed to be engaged by swaging tools after the back and lever members are assembled whereby the said offset portion can be closed on running webbing to permanently attach the webbing to the buckle.
2. A buckle having a pivoted lever and a sheet metal back provided with a pair of transversely disposed slits, the metal between the slits being offset to form a wall in frontl of said back, in combinationwith a running webbinghaving its extremity permanently gripped between the edges of the wall rand the corresponding edges of the back formed by slitting the back in forming the wall, the said webbing having its moving1 portion kpassed between said lever and ac r.
8. A buckle comprising Ya back member provided with an opening having one of its sides depressed to form a continuous offset portion, and a lever member pivoted to said back member to one side of said opening, the said back member being formed to be en gaged by swaging tools after the back and lever members are assembled whereby the sides of said opening can be closed on running webbing to permanently attach the webbing to the'bllckle. v
4. A bucklel comprising a back Vhaving transversely Y disposed adjacent slits, the metal between the slitsbeing depressed to form a continuous offset portion, and a lever pivoted to said back to one side of said slits, in combination Vwith a runningl webbing passed between said lever andback Vand having its extremity permanently gripped between the edges of the offset portion and the corresponding edges of the back formed, by slitting the back in forming the offset portion.
5. A buckle comprising a sheet metal back member provided With an opening, the metal along one side of said opening being continuous and oset leaving a depression in the face of said back member7 and a lever member pivoted to said back member to one side of said opening, whereby the back member is adapted to be engaged by swaging tools after the back and lever members are assembled to close said opening on running webbing and attach the webbing permanently to the buckle.
6. The combination with a running webbing, of a buckle comprising a sheet metal back member provided with an opening, the metal along one side of Said opening being continuous and offset leaving a depression in the face of the back member, and a Weblocking leverl pivoted to said back member to one side of said opening, the said webbing heilig passed into said depression through said opening which latter is closed on the webbing to permanently attach the same to the buckle, and the said webbing being passed between said lever and back members.
