Myvinvention relates to improvementsin woven fabric cartridge belts,-+-theobject of the invention being to `provide means to be secured within a cartridge 'pocket so as to. divide the same into two compartments and" at the same time prevent liability of the pointed ends of cartridges penetrating the bottom of the pocket, and to so construct said means as toeconomize in the manufac ture of cartridge pockets havingthe characteristics. above mentioned without detracting, in any degree from the efi'ciencyl ofthe same in the performance of thejfunctions Vfor which they are intended. i Y Y With this object Vin view, the invention consists lin certain vnovel `features of construction and combinationsof partsas hereinafter set claims. y i
In the accompanying, drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a cartridge belt showing an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 isa transverse sectional view of the same, andfFig. 3 is a detail view.
1 represents thebody portion of a cartridge belt of the multi-ply `woven fabricV ty'pe having integral pockets12- thereon. AV
tube 3 of woven fabric, closed at its lower end, is secured within the pocket, andwoven extensions L1 5 are provided lingline with the rear wall of this tube, said extensions prof jecting` respectively, froml the upper and lower ends of the tube. AIn *manufacturing* this devi'ce,`I first weave the portion 5, preferably of a single ply,.andvthen the tubularV portion 3 is wovenintegral with the portion l and in such manner that thelower lendofv said tubular portion 3 will 4be. closed when the tubular portion 3 (thejdepth ofwhich `is approximately equal to the depth of the car# tridge pocket) shall have :been woven, `.the
extension 5 will be wovenin .line f with .then
back wall of the tubularv portion 3.v This structure is then placed within thevpocket with the portion 4 projecting above-thesame 1 Speccationofietters Patent. Appiicatin fileaseptember 24, 1997. 1 serai No. 394,291.
forth and pointed out in theV Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Vso as to constitute a `cover or l flap for the pocket. The tube is secured to the backs of the pocket near the upper edge thereof by `:means of eyelets 6, and also preferably to the sides Vof the pocket by means of eyelets 7 The portion 5 which forms the lower end of the tube 3 is made to extend over the bottom of the pocket under the closed lower end of the tube and its end is secured (preferably byv stitching) to the front wall of the pocket asindicated at 8. i vWith a construction. such as above described, `simple means are provided, which can be economically manufactured and then easily and accurately secured within a cartridge pocket so as to divide the same into two compartments, and at the same time constitute effectual reinforcement for the bottom of the pocket. This is important with the use of pointed cartridges, such as nowemployed in the military service. With woven fabric cartridge belts such as now in use, these pointed cartridges are liable to penetrate the bottoms of the pockets, and much difficulty is found in so constructing divided woven cartridge pockets having integral dividing walls as to avoid this. With my improvements, the closed end of the tube `3 constitutes `reinforcement for one compartment of the pocket, and the portion or extension 5 forms-a reinforcement for the other compartment, said extension 5 also supplementing the reinforcement of the firstmentioned compartment.
Having fully described my invention "what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
.. 1. The combination with a cartridge pocket, of a fabric tube secured therein and `dividing the same into two compartments, Vthe lower end of lsaid fabric tube being `closed and forming a reinforcement for one of said compartments, and an extension from the closed lower end of the tube and forming a reinforcement for the other compartment.
` 2f The combination with a cartridge pocket, of a tube of woven fabric closed at its lower end and provided with a woven extension projecting from the closed end of saidftube, said tube and the extension (thereof, secured in said pocket and dividing the same into twocompartments and providing reinforcement for both compartments.
l3. The Y combination with a cartridge adjacent to the uncture of the lower extension therewith, the Suid lower extension covering,` the bottom of the pocket und secured to the front wull thereof and the upper eX- tension projecting;` above the pocket und constituting u. Hap or cover therefor.
ln testimony whereof, l have signed. this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
