CUP AND SAUGER. ArrLIoA'rIo! rILnn 001.5, 1907.
Patented Sept 29, 1908.
DAVID ALEXANDER STEWART, OF ROSLYN, NEW ZEALAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'lO JOHN CAMERON, OF DUNEDIN, NEW ZICALANI).
CUP AND SAUCER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application filed October 6, 1807. Serial No. 898,085.
To all whom it may concern:
Do it known that I, I).\vn) Am-zxaxnnn STEWART, subject of Great Britain, residing at 42 Forth street, Roslyn, Dunedin, New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements .in Cups and Saucers, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide means for securing or locking cups to saucers so that they may be readily taken apart or secured together when desired, and so that. nevertheless the saucers may be packed to occupy a small 5 nice and when desired the cup may be placer in the saucer in a stable position without being secured thereto.
The invention consists of the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth or illustrated in the drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawinrs, in which similar linmerals of reference int icate similar parts. Figure 1. is a perspective view of the cup, showing the beveled la s. Fig. 2. is a plan of the cup inverted. 3. IS a plan of the saucer showing the interior buttons. Fig. 4. is a plan of the saucer inverted. Fi is a sectional view of the saucer througi one of the buttons.
The objects of the invention are effected by making the cup (1) with the circular flange (2 at the bottom thereof dee )er than usual an with outwardly beveled lugs (3) )rojecting therefrom at intervals. These cvcled lu s are formed when finishing the cap, the cage (2) bein made all round with its inner face vertica and its outer face beveled, the )ortions (5) (6 (7) between the lugs (33) cin afterwar s cut out vertical, one of them going preferably under the handle (4). The saucer 38) preferably has its base (9) flat inside, an it ias preferably three buttons (10) (11) (12) equidistantly placed round tie base (9) and having beveled inner faces corresponding to the bevel of the lags 3) on the bottom of the cup (1) which are a apted to take under the here ed edges of the buttons. The buttons are preferably molded on the saucer so as to be made as small as possible, the upper surfaces are rounded for ready cleaning and the buttons are made in sizes to suit the particular make of cup and saucer dealt with. The
, circular external flazzge (13) on the bottom of the saucer is ma 0 of greater diameter and depth than usual and plain, so that when a number of saucers are packed together the external circular flanges (13) thereof rest outside the buttons (10) (11) 12) before described, and the bottom of one saucer sits over the top of the buttons of the saucer underneath it. The deep flange (2) and hollow on the bottom of the cup (1) allows the cup when in use to he )laced in a stable position on the saucer wit iout necessarily being locked. one of the buttons beim covered by the cup within the flange (2 thereof. The bottom of thecup is also made hollow to better effect. this.
In (meration, the cup is held as usual by the handle and placed on the saucer so that. the spaces (5) ((5) (7) are above. the buttons (10) (11) (12) the lugs (3) of the cup resting on tho saucer between the buttons. The cup is then slightly turned to cause the beveled lugs (3) to take under the beveled edges of the buttons which hold it until the cupiis removed by a similar reverse action.
aving now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination a saucer, a series of buttons integral therewith surroululing the inside bottom thereof, a cup, a flange on the base of the cup and means whereby the said flange engages said buttons so as to disengugeabl fasten the cup to the saucer substantially as described.
2. In combination a saucer, a series of buttons having beveled inner faces integral with and surrounding the inside bottom of the saucer, a cup and beveled lugs round the base of the ca coiiperatin with said buttons whereby tie cup may disengageably fastened to the saucer substantially as described.
3. In combination a saucer, a series of buttons integral therewith surrounding the inside bottom thereof a cap, a flange on the base of the cup and lneans whereby the said flange engages said buttons so as to discugageably fasten the cup to the saucer, the cup having a hollowed muler surface whereby it may be placed on the saucer without being fastened thereto substantially as described.
4. In munbiaation a saucer, a series of buttons integral therewith surrounding the inside bottom thereof a cup, a flange on the base of the cup and means whereby the said flange engages said buttons so as to disengageably fasten the on to the saucer, the suueer havin a circu iuflange of large diameter on 1ts under surface whereby a number of saucers may be superimposed to nceupy small space in packing substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID ALEXANDER STEWART.
