PAPER-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
Appliaaiion maa January 21, isos. sariai No. 411,997.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL OORBIN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chamlain, in the county of Clinton and State of ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper clips, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap and practical clip of unusual capacity for holding together a pile of papers or leaves either at the edge thereof or at a point intermediate the ends of a pack of folded papers, in which latter event the clip Which is laterally eXpansible is adapted to clasp the opposite edges of the papers as well as obtain a firm hold on the body portions of said papers.
Wlth the above and other objectsinview, the invention consists in the novel construction7 combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
The accompanying drawing represents a plan view of a paper clip shaped in accordance with the present invention.
The cli contem lated in this invention is compose of a sin e iece of spring wire, the central portion o W 'ch is bent to form, a central jaw or clasp consisting of substantially parallel branches l and 2 connected by a curvilinear portion 3. This forms a substantially Ushaped central jaw or clasp which is open at one end and closed at the other end. After forming the central j aw or clasp, the opposite portions of the spring Wire are bent laterally in o posite directions and substantially perpendicular to the branches 1 and 2 to form cross bars 4 and 5 which connect the branches l and 2 with o positely arranged side bars 6 and 7, the latter being formed by bending the Wire -substantially at ri ht angles to the cross bars 4 and 5. Final y the ends of the Wire are bent inward to form inbent clasps 8 and 9 Which are substantially perpendicular to the side bars 6 and 7, the said inbent clasps or ends terminatinshort of the parallel branches 1 and 2.
rom the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be observed that there areno intersecting or crossing points in the entire clip. In this way an unusual degree of resiliency or spring action is imparted to the clip adapting the same as a Whole to yield to an eXtra,a ordinary degree and proportionately increasing the holding capacity of the clip. The clip may be applied to the edges of a batch of sheets or papers to be held thereby or when such papers are folded in the usual legal form, they may be slipped over the central jaw or clasps and under the inbent lateral clasps While the opposite side bars 6 and 7 will cross the opposite folded edges of the apers Which are thus securely held at a numer of different points.
Having described the invention, I claim A clip' of the class described composed of single pieces of spring wire bent to form a central open loop With substantially parallel branches, and rectangular clasps at opposite sides of said loop comprising inbent terminals disposed at right an les to the loop, the closed end of the loop eing extended to project outside of or beyondthe plane of said terminals.
In testimony whereof I afX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROYAL OORBIN.
