STRUCTURAL METAL Penn;
Patented seph 22, 190s.
v Applietion filed February 13, 1904. Serial No. 193,421.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ETIIAN I. Donos, of Avalon, Alle hen county, Pennsylvania, have invente a new and useful Structural Metal Part, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accoin anymg drewin s, forming part of this sgeci cation, in whic Figure 1 s ows in elevation a car purhn made in accordance ,with my invention; Fig. :2 is a view of a. modified construction on, a smaller scale; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a car construction to which my purlin has been applied Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of brakebeams embodying my invention, and Figs. 6 and 7' show the mode of forming the parts.
- M invention consists in making struc tum metal parts, particularly for use as the guts of railway cars such as roof-purlins end rake-beams ofnie'tal pieces tapering from the middle towards both ends and consti- L tuted by dividin a. flanged beam l0ngitu dinrtlly through he web with a bias cut or Cut/S. i
In the drawing I show my invention ap- )llP-(l to the manufacture of purlins and rake-beams. Thepurlin shown inbigs. 1 and 3 is made from an Lbearn or channel which, as shown in Fig. 6, is divided b 0 longitudinal bias cuts b, c, and c, d, exten ing longitudinally through the web of the beam, and a transverse cut c, 2, thus making parts 7' g, g of, tapering form, the part f bemg W1 er at the middle than at the ends and havinv along one edge the original flange of 5 the I-Ixecm or channel, while the other edge is unflen ed. This part f constitutes t e purlin of l ig. 1.
' In Fig. 2 I show the purlin made of two ieces g, g, constituted by dividin an I- 9 earn or c annel with a longitudinal ias cut 1 through its web es shown in Fig. 7, the wider ends of the pieces being cbutted and united by a riveted plate j.
In Fig. 3 I show wear in which a purlin f 5- such as shown in Fig. 1, is cp lied, z, i representin the usual longitudina roof su ports:
In Big. 5 I show a brake-beam wnch is made of the parts it, h, above described, suitable braces and irons k, k, and a connecting- 9 late m being a lied thereto.
p The brekebe zl in shown in Fig; 4 is made of parts h, 71 made as described with reference to Fig. 7; 1
A blank for a structural metal part composed of a channel beam slit or cut in a longi-- tudinal direction from each end at points near one edge of the beamupwerdly to .a central point near the opposite edge of said beam end slit or cut transversely of the beam froni the near edge to said central point.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
