CAR PART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,269, dated January 17, 1905.
Application filed February 26, 1904. Serial No. 195,343.
from which my improved car part is made.
This blank may be a section of an I-beam, as shown in Fig. 2, a channel-beam, as 1n Fig. 3,
or a Z-bar, as in Fig. 4L, these figures being' end views of the blank. Eig. 5 is a side view of a car-stake made in accordancewith my invention. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the stake. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 are end views of the stake when made, respectively, from an Lbeam, a channel-beam, and a Zebar. Fig. 10 is an end view of the car-stake shown in Fig. 7 when braced by the application of an angle-bar. Fig. l1 is an end elevation of a modified construction of stake braced marginally with angle-bars.
In making car-stakes in accordance with my present invention Itake a blank, such as shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, which is afianged beam, either an lli-beam or channel-beam or a Z-bar, and divide it longitudinally through the web with a bias cut I) b and also with transverse angular cuts c c, thus cutting out pieces of metal d, which may be discarded as scrap. These cuts produce two pieces of metal 2 2, each of which has along one edge the original marginal iiange 3 of the beam from which it is made, while its other edge is cut. This piece is of suitable form to constitute a carstake, and to better adapt it for this purpose I place it in a suitable die or other apparatus, by which its cut edge is iianged, as shown at 4 in Figs. 5, 7, 8, and 9. I prefer to reinforce and strengthen the car-stake further by riveting to it a reinforcing-angle 5 opposite to the iiange 4:, as shown in Eig. 10.
In Fig. 11 I show a modification in which the car-stake 2 has no integral liange 4; but instead thereof reinforcing-flanges 5 5L are riveted along the cut margin of the stake on both sides.
Within the scope of the invention as defined in the claims the skilled mechanic will be able to modify the construction in various ways, since l. A car part consisting of a single rolled beam having along' one edge an integral rolled i'lange and having the other edge an angled cut edge reinforced by a marginal flange; substantially as described.
2. A car part having along one edge an integral rolled flange and having the other edge an angled cut edge reinforced by an integral marginal iiange; substantially as described.
3. A car part having along one edge an integral rolled liange and having the other edge an angled cut edge reinforced by an integral marginal iiange and with an attached angle`||A piece; substantially as-described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand February 25, 1904.
