UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MECHANICAL TAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed October 24, 1907. Serial No. 398,923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDEEIcx REED HOISINGTON, citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Tags, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for removable attachment to goods, wares, merchandise and boxes or the like, whereby prices and advertising matter are displayed.
The particular form of my invention herein illustrated is well adapted for use on cigar boxes when open in show-cases.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a top-plan view of one form of my invention, comprising a rotatable display-card pivoted 011 a clip having a plurality of ways for receiving portions of the articles to which the clips are attached; Fig. 2 is aperspectiveview of what is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows my new clip attached in different positions to the edge of a cigar-box. Fig. 4 shows a modification, in which the display-card is pivotally attached at its center to the clip; and Fig. 5 shows another modification, in which the clip and display cart are made integrally out of one piece of sheet metal. Fig. 6 shows the structure of Fig. 1 pinned on goods.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a displaycard, which may be of any desired contour, and of celluloid, paper, sheet metal, or other suitable material.
2 indicates a clip or tang made of wire and bent to form the approximately parallel sides 3, 3 and 4, 4 whereby the way or space 5 is formed between the legs 3, 3 on one side of the space 5 and the legs 4, 4 on the other side of the space 5. The wire is also so bent as to form the hook-end 6, and one end 7 of the wire is left free. The other end portion 8 of the wire is formed with an eye 9, through which and display-card 1 an eyelet 11 is passed to secure the pivotal attachment of the display card to the clip. The way or space 5 is adapted to receive the wall of a box or the like, as indicated in Fig. 3. The hookend 6 is adapted to be passed over the edge of a box or thehke, or to be inserted in goods, whereby the device is attached thereto. The free end 7 of the clip may be inserted into goods for attachment of the device.
In some forms of the invention, the end portion 8 may be bent at 12 to bring the display-card at an angle to that portion, so that the display-card, when affixed to the edge of a box in a show-case, may be inclined from the vertical.
In all forms of the invention there'is, in effect, a single tang or leg which has a plu- I rality of spaces, one at an angle to the other,
so that one or the other space may be pushed on the edge of a box to hold the display card in desired position. In allcases the display card is permanently attached to the single many-way tang, movable thereon. The free end of the tang may be pointed or not as preferred.
The display-card is adapted to contain advertising matter, or the names of articles, or the prices, one or all.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the card-rcceiving end of the wire from which the clip is formed is bent at 15, above which an eyelet 16 projects through a hole in the center of the card, the upper outer end of the eyelet being upset at 17 to hold the card in ace.
p In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the tang or clip and card are made of one piece of sheet metal, the card being indicated by 18 and the tang or clip by 19. This form of clip has a hooked end 20, and is recessed at 21 to form a way or space whereby the clip may be passed over the edge of a box, and may be bent on its tang to bring written or printed matter into convenient position for reading. The hook end of this -form of clip is preferably pointed at 23, and the hook end may be hooked into or on goods, boxes or the like, while the pointed end of the hook may be inserted bodily into goods.
It will be observed that the display cards illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, may be rotated on their pivotal connection with the clip into any desired position for convenient display of matter on the card.
What I claim is A mechanical tag comprising a single tang having a plurality of box-side receiving spaces, one at an angle to another, and a displaycard movably and permanently connected with one end portion of the tang.
In testimony whereof I have ELfllXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
