PATENTED SEPT. 8, 1908'.

FEED WATER REGULATOR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 30, 1907.

HARRY R. OBRIAN, OF OXFORD, OHIO, A SSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN T. VANNESS, OF OXFORD, OHIO.
FEED-WATER REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY R. OBRIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Feed- Water Regulator, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to feed water regulators for steam boilers, and has for its principal object to provide a regulating device of very simple and economical construction and having but few parts. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a regulating device for opening and closing the valve that controls the supply of water to the ooiler, the valve being operable by a float located in a water. chamber that is connected to the boiler, and being arranged outside. the water chamber for convenience inpointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofthe advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a feed water regulator constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view .of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate correspondin parts throughout the several figures of the rawings.
In carrying out the invention, a float cham ber 10 is arranged at the front or side of the boiler adjacent to the normal water line, and is connected at the top to a steam space, and at the bottom to the water space of the boiler, so that the water level within the casing shall correspond to'that in the boiler.
The casing is formed of upper and lower sections 15 and 16, which are provided with bolting flanges and secured together in such manner as to form a steam tight joint. The upper section 15 is provided with a lateral extension 17 to one side of which is bolted a valve casing 18, the valve being connected in the pipe which controls the supply of water to the boiler, that is to say, it may be disposed in the steam pipe which leads from the steam space of the boiler to the feed pump, or it may be arranged in the water pipe leading from the feed pump to the boiler. The stem 20 of the valve passes through the valve casing and through an opening in the side of the extension 17, and to its inner end is rigidly secured an arm 22 that extends into the main casing, and on the inner end of thisarm is hung a float 23 of any construction.
In the operation of the device as thus far described, the lowering of the water level in the boiler will allow the float to descend, and the valve will be opened for the purpose of allowing a larger quantity of steam to pass to the feed pump, or a larger to pass from the ump or 0t or water supply to the boiler. hen the height of the water level increases, the valve will be closed, so as to reduce the supply. It may be desired at times to increase the height of the water in the boiler, and for this purpose a manually operable device. is connected to the arm 22.
At the lower side of the extension 17 is arranged a stufling box 25 through which passes a handled stem 26 arranged to screw within the inner portion of the box, and to the inner end of this stem is swiveled a block 27 having a recess for the passage of the arm 22. When the handled stem is turned in one direction, the arm 22 will be pulled down and the valve will be moved to open position and may be retained in that position for any desired length of time in order to increase the guantity of water in the boiler. I/Vhen it is esired to again restore the feed water regulator to operative position, the handled stem is turned in the opposite direction and the float allowed to rise, and thereafter control the valve.
I claim 1. In combination, a float chamber, a float therein, a feed water controlling valve, a rod connecting the valve to the float, a slotted qliliantity of water block encircling the rod, and a threaded stem swiveled to said block and arranged to lock the float from movement.
2. In combination, a float chamber, a lateral chamber extending therefrom, a valve provided with a stem extending into said chamber, a rod connecting the valve to the float and manually operated means for locking the valve from movement, comprising a slotted block encircling the rod and a threaded stem sWiveled to said block and arranged 10 to lock the float from movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HARRY R. OBRIAN.
