Description

Dec.' 24, 1929. c. B. MACK VALVE DEVICE Filed Deo. 22, 1924 Patented Dec. 24, 1929 Militia. SFA'EES @FFECE CHARLES B. MACK, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN-OB, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO CHERRY-BURRELL CORPORATION, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS VALVE DEVICE Appneation sied December 22, 1924. seriai No. 757,391.
My invention relates to valve devices. The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and etlicient construction l l of balanced valve device. In 'the accompanying drawings the ligure is a view partly in elevation and 1partly in vertical section of a balanced valveY device embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a valve casing forming the body of the device, said casing 1 having an open end 2 and a side inlet or orifice 3. l/Vithin the casing 1 is a slidable hollow valve 4. The device is preferably mounted with the casing 1 vertically disposed, in which case the valve 4 will work up and down and the end opening Q will be at the bottom of casing 1. Y
The valve 4 is made with open ends 5 and 6, whereof the open end 5 will be the top of the valve and the end 6 the bottom of the same when the valve is arranged in vertical man* ner as referred to. In such case the valve will close the side opening` 3 when in the position shown in the drawings, which is its uppermost position, but when said valve is lowered its upper end passes below the top of side opening 3 and consequently liquid may flow between side opening 3 and orifice 2, thereby permitting passage of liquid through the valve device. As valve 4 is lowered more and more it will open orifice 3 more and more and so open the valve device more and more until it is fully opened.
Casing 1 is provided with a shoulder 7, which Will be annular in case the casing 1 and valve 4 are annular, and this shoulder 7 limits the upward movement of valve 4 so that said valve will be checked or stopped when the valve device is closed.
The upper end of valve casing 1 is preferably made open and provided with a closing plug 9 by which it may be normally closed and this plug 9 is controlled and held in clos- .ingV position by a rotary collar 10 having projections 11 by which it may beturned, the upper endrof valve casing 1 being threaded at 12 and collar 10 being interiorly threaded so that it may be screwed down on valve casing 1 to firmly chf-ip closing plug 9 in position.
Plug 9 is preferably provided with a projecting tubular member 13 forming a stutling box and `containing packing material 14 and a packing gland 15 provided with apertures 16 by which it may be turned so as to screw it down into tubular member 13.
A valve rod or stem 17 passes through stufling gland 15, the same being preferably secured to valve 4 as by making said valve and rod 17 integral, and rod or stem 17 is preferably made tubular and contains a float rod 18 which extends down through stem 17 and valve 4 and projects below thelower end of casing 1, and is provided with a lioat 20. A Cotter pin 21 passes through members 17 and 18 so as to normally but detachably lock the same together, whereby valve 4 will be raised or lowered by raising or lowering rod 18, so thatif float 2O is placed in a liquid containing vessel, and its position raised and lowered. by raising and lowering the level of liquid in said vessel, such operation will cause the raising'and lowering of valve 4 and thereby open and close the same. Thus if desired the float 20 may be used and the valve device will automatically control the valve so as to permit the valve to automatically regulate the liquid in the vessel, the valve being opened whenever the liquid level falls below a predetermined point.
Cotter pin 21 is preferably so located as to form a stop which will strike against the top of gland 15 and thereby limit the downward movement of the iloat and valve.
Inlet or orilice 3 may be connected in any suitable way, one arrangement shown being to provide the same with a coupling member 23 controlled and held in position by a screw threaded collar 24, said member 23 having a threac ed tubular socket 25, into which a pipe or tubular member 26 may be fitted.
Thus it will be seen that the valve device provides a balanced valve, the liquid flowing through the interior of the valve so that the pressure of the water does not tend to jam the valve against its seat. Also that the float may adiust the valve automatically either directly or through intermediate mechanism. Also that the whole device is detachable so that the valve is practically7 a knockdown construction and thus may be readily packed and shipped, and also may be cleaned so as to be sanitary.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
