WATER LEVEL REGULATOR.
APPLICATION FILED I'EB.15,1905.

UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. LANE AND GEORGE LANE, OF POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK.
WATER-LEVEL REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15, 1905. Serial No. 245,701.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. LANE and GEORGE LANE, citizens of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, county of Dutchess, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Water-Level Regulators, of which the followwill in some manner control the water-supply of the boiler.
In the present case a valve is employed to control a by-pass from the source of watersupply, which is normally open, but which is closed when the water-level of the boiler falls below a predetermined point.
The accompanying drawings will serve to illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial vertical section taken through a motor-vehicle, showing the regulator in the position which it would occupy relative to the boiler and the water-circulation. Fig. 2 is a side view of the regulator and longitudinal section through the by-pass valve. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates a pipe connected at its lower end and to the interior of a boiler 6 at a determined maximum water-level. Connected to the upper end of this pipe is a second pipe 7. The pipe 7 is mounted in a frame 8 by means of a bolt 10. The other end is loose and situated in an opening 11 in a projection 12 from frame 8. Pivotally mounted in frame 8 at 13 is a lever 14. The lower end of this lever has an opening 15, in which is located the stem 16 of a by-pass valve 17. Situated on the stem 16 is an adjustable stop 18. The stem 16 to the left of the lever 15 is enlarged and is situated in an opening 19 in the projection 12 of the frame 8. On the end of this portion of stem 16 is a collar 20, and situated between the collar and the projection 12 .is a helical spring 21.
Mounted upon the lever 15 is a threadadjusting pin and set-screw 22.
23 represents a pipe from the source of water-supply 24, and 25 a constantly-operated pump; 26, a pipe from the outlet of pump to by-pass valve 17 and communicating through branch pipe 27 with the interior of the boiler; 28, a pipe from by-pass valve to pipe 23, and 29 a check-valve in pipe 27-.
The action of my device may be described as follows: Pump 25 draws the feed-water from tank 24 through pipe 23 and delivers it through pipe 26 to a by-pass valve 17, and assuming the water-level of the boiler to be at the maximum the water passes through the by-pass valve and flows by pipe 28 back to. the pump. Should the water-level of the boiler fall below the maximum, steamwill en= ter the pipe 5. The temperature of this steam will expand pipe 7, which in turn will move lever 15 and a valve-stem 16, thereby closing the by pass valve. Water from pump 25 at such time will flow down pipe 26 and through branch pipe 27 into the boiler to restore the normal water-level. The entrance of water into pipe 5, thereby cutting off the steam from the boiler, will cause a contraction of the pipe 7, and the by-pass valve 17 will be opened by the spring 21.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- 1. An automatic water-level regulator for a steam-boiler comprising a pipe connected at one end to the normal water-level of the boiler, a pipe connected to said first-named pipe,- a frame in which said second-named pipe is located andinwhichitis secured at one end, a lever pivoted in the frame, an adjustable connection between said lever and said secondnamed pipe, and a valve in the water-supply connections to be actuated by the movement of said lever.
2. An automatic water-level regulator for a steam-boiler comprising a pipe connected at one end to the normal water-level of the boiler, an expansible body connected to said pipe, a lever mounted independent of said expansible body and in operative relation thereto, means for adjusting the lever relatively to said expansible body, a springopened valve adapted to be closed by the movement of the lever, and adjustable means for regulating the movement of the valve.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
