Be it known that l, GUSTAF HENNING EK- sTRoM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as a part thereof. Y

This invention has for its object to obtain a hat pin for ladies hats which is to be inserted through one side of the body of the hat only, and when so inserted may be arranged to securely fasten the hat to a tress of hair.

l carry my object into effect by means of a pin made with a short shank, having a hook at its extremity and provided with a clamp longitudinally slidable on the shank, and adapted to hold the pin, after the same has been arranged, to secure the hat in place as below described.

In the drawings, Figure l shows a hat with my improved pin attached thereto as in use. Fig. 2 is a front end perspective of my hatpin. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the rear section of my pin.

The letters designate the parts referred to.

My hat pin is made of wire and comprises a short shank, a, made with a knobb,and hook c. On the shank a is a longitudinally slidable clamp (Z. The latter is made of a length of wire, in the central section c of which is formed a clamp-head made of two loops ff', arranged at a right angle to the main body of the clamp; the inner faces of such loops ff being arranged so as to be opposite to, but preferably not quite in touch with each other. The two ends of the wire g g are further arranged to extend approximately parallel with the shank a, and the extremities k 7L are bent inward, and are twisted together around the shank a, so as to constitute a sleeve i for the shank a to slide in.

In practice, it is preferable to form the wire clamp d first, then insert the shank a of the pin through the sleeve i, and finally to form the hook c on the extremity of the pin.

My hat-pin is used as follows: The pin is in the first place inserted through the hat body as convenient, and. is afterward s0 arranged as to engage the hook c with a tress of hair. Before inserting and adjusting the pin to secure the hat, the shank L is to be disengaged from the embrace of the coils ff, by pressing the latter clear of the shank. After the hat-pin has been arranged so as to insert the hook thereof in a tress of hair, the pin is drawn outward until the point of the hook bears against the interior of the body of the hat; and next the shank is secured in such position by moving the clamp d tightly against the hat body, and forcing the shank between the coils ff and down against the member e of the clamp. To disengage the hat pin the coils ff are again pressed down wi th the fingers, so as to release the shank a, after which the hat-pin may be pushed in a trifle, the hook member c thereof readily disengaged from the hair, and the hat removed.

Having fully described my invention what l claim and d'esire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. The combination, of a hat-pin adapted to be inserted through the body of the hat, comprising a short shank made with a hook at its inner end, a clamp slidably mounted on said pin-shank and comprising a sleeve, arms on said sleeves extending inward toward the hook of the pin, and a bifurcated clamp-head on the inner ends of said arms arranged to be slipped olf and on the pin shank, to release and fix the clamp in place.

2. The combination, of a hat-pin adapted to be inserted through the body of the hat and comprising a short shank made with a hook at its inner end, clamp slidably mounted on said pin-shank, said clamp being made of a single piece of wire and consisting of a coiled sleeve portion, integral arms extending inward therefrom towards the hook of the pin, and loops integrally formed on the inner ends of said arms at each side of the pin-shank and arranged to be slipped off and on the latter, to release and fix the clamp in place.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a hat pin comprising a short shank, a hook integrally formed at the inner end thereof, a clamp slidably mounted on said pin shank, said clamp being made of a single piece of wire and consisting of a coiled sleeve portion,
