Description

No. 807,689. PATENTED DEC. 19, 1905.

COLLAR BUTTON.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 12, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT orFIoE. i
ADOLF SOHWIEGER, OF HANOVER, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUST BAUROSE, OF GODESBERG, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1905.
Application filed January 12, 1905. Serial No. 240,837.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF SOHWIEGER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hanover, in the Kingdom of Prussia and Empire of Germany, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of collar-buttons in which there is a gripping device; and the object of my invention is to hold the necktie securely and prevent it from pulling forward, riding up in front, or sliding around on the neck. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows a central section of the improved button on an enlarged scale.
The collar-button is of the usual exterior shape, size, and general appearance and comprises stem at, integral with the head (Z, and base f. The base f is hollow and has an inwardly-turned flange f to retain the plate g, which closes the bottom end of the base. Through the stem (4 and head at there extends a central bore 72, open at each end and laterally enlarged at the head, as at h, to house the claws on the neckwear-retainer next to be described. Through the bore it there extends a looped needle 6, formed of two parallel wires, the outer ends of which are bent outward from one another and are curved inward to form two claws e e. The spring 0 tends to keep the needle and its claws e 6 always drawn inward, so that the claw or claws e e do not while in their normal position project beyond the head, but lie in the recess h.
The spring 0 engages the looped end of the needle I). By pressing on the plate g, forming the lower part of the base of the button, the plate is brought into the position shown in dotted lines, and the needle or loop 6 is moved axially outward and its claws e c projected beyond the head it, whereupon, owing to the resilient nature of the needle, they spread laterally apart, as shown in dotted lines, to engage the fabric of the neckwear. Relaxing the pressure on the plate 9 the needle I; is drawn inward and the claws c e are drawn together and inward, engaging the fabric of the neckwear. This latter is held in place until upward pressure is again voluntarily exerted by the wearer upon the plate g, when the projection of the needle Z) and the claws e 6 permits of releasing the neckwear from the hold of the latter and its readjustment or removal.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
In a button, the combination of a headed stem having an axial bore, laterally enlarged within the head, with a looped needle terminating in a pair of self-separating claws adapted to be compressed within the enlarged bore, a spring for drawing the needle inward into the, bore and means for counteracting the spring-pressure and projecting the needleclaws at will.
Signed this 2d day of January, 1905.
ADOLF SOHWIEGER.
