Be it known that we, DANA W. CoLLIsoN and GEORGE MATTHEWS, citizens of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Sash-Fasteners, of which t e following is a specification. 4
This invention relates to sash-fasteners, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which will lock both sashes with one movement, and also a fastener which permits either or both sashes to be partly opened and locked in that position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sash-fastener which is simple in construction and operation, and also one which can be readily applied to the window.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a window showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of keeper hereinafter referred to.
In the drawing, 7 denotes the meeting-rail of the lower sash, and 8 is one of the stiles on the upper sash. The fastener is secured to the top of the meeting-rail 7 adjacent one side of the window casing 9. The fastener comprises a sliding-bolt 10 which is engageable with one of a series of holes 11 made in the casing 9, and a turn-button 12 engageable with one of a series of keepers 13 on the stile 8. The sliding-bolt and turn-button are mounted in a casing 14 which is secured to the meeting-rail 7 by screws 15 or in any other suitable manner.
The turn-button is pivoted eccentrically at 16 in the casing and is adapted to be projected therefrom when it is swung on its pivot so that one of its edges may engage the keepers 13. The turn-button is also provided with a finger piece 17 which projects from the casing 14, whereby the turnbutton is swung on its pivot to be engaged or disengaged.
The sliding-bolt 10 is adapted to be protruded from that end of the casing 14 which is next to the window casing 9 in order that it may enter one of the holes 11. The inner end of the bolt is halved, as indicated at 18, and fits under the turn-button, and to this portion of the bolt is fixed a pin 19 which projects upwardly therefrom and enters a slot 20 in the turnbutton. This slot is eccentric and so arranged that when the turnbutton is swung on its pivot to engage it with its keeper, the bolt will also be protruded from the casing 14, and when swung in the direction to retract the bolt is also retracted. It will therefore be seen that a single movement operates both fastening means. The bolt works in a longitudinal guide groove 21 which causes it to move in a straight line.
A series of keepers 13 and holes 11 are provided in order that both sashes may be locked in partly open position. The holes 11 are preferably fitted with a metal lining 22 to prevent wear. The keepers 13 are plates secured to the stile 8 by screws 23, or in any other suitable manner, and having in their faces notches 24 which are entered by the edge of the turn-button when the same is projected from its casing. The keeper which is engaged by the turn-button when the win dow is closed is a plate having on its face a shoulder 25 engageable by the projecting edge of the turn-button.
The modified form of keeper illustrated in Fig. 5 consists of a bar 26 having in its face a series of notches 27 engageable by the projecting edge of the turn-button. This bar is secured to the stile 8 by screws, or in any other suitable manner.
The fastener herein described is sim 1c in construction and can be cheaply procfiiced. It securely fastens the sashes and it can be readily applied, no change being re uired in the structure of the sashes or the win ow casing except to make the holes 11.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
