Description

PATENTED AUG 25, 1968.
J, A. SMITH. BULRGLAR ALARM.
APPLICATION NLBD AUG. 14, 1907.
JOSEPH ARTHUR SMITH,
or DENVER, coLonAno.
EUBGLAR-ALARM.
Application lc August le To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Josnrn A. SMirH, acitizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county oi Denver and Stat-e oColof rado have invented a new and useful Burglar- Alarm, of which. the following is a speciccfl tion.
v 2o opening of the door, or at any period to which the alarm has been setfrom complete closureto wide open. lrrthe accompanying drawing :--l"igure 1 is anelevation ofthe improved burglar alarm as it." appears when applied to a door in operative position. the amb on the line 2--2 of F ig. l looking in the direction of the arrow A, the alarm being in itsincperative position. F ig. 3 is a 4horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. i.
Similar reference letters are used on all the iigures for designating the same parts. v 5 Let the numeral 1 represent a part of a door, swinging on hinges, attached 2.
ing of the door, is supported in a ioldcr 4 attached tothe door or jamb by screws, see Fig. 3. c
The burglar alarm proper comprises a c" 'l 40 lindrical barrel 5 closed nermanentlv at its i u lower end 5a to form a seat fora coil spring G v)laced within the barrel.. ln one side of the arrel is out a T shaped slot 7, its head or Vlaterally extending slots 8 being at the bottom of the slot. The upper end of the barrel is threaded internally for the bottom end of a screw plug 9 having a milled or roughened head 9a for turning it and a hole 10 through its center in wbici is placed e. blank cartridge to be exploded when the alarm is tripped. rihe screw plug 9 projects a short distance above the top of trie barrel 5 and about the same distance Within it.
Slidable Within the up er part of barrel 5 is a plug or hammer 11 gaving a projection 12 on its upper surface to strike the cartridge lSpecilcation of Letters Patent.
, 1907. seriell-Naseem.
This invention relates to that ty e of hure Fig. 2 is a vertical section of to a jamb' A burglar alarm 3 operated bly the open-Av and explode itwhen the trip lever is actuated. A short distance below the top of the hammer 11 and'ettached thereto is a trip-arml 13 projecting Lthrough the longitudinal portion of the slot 7 at its upper end.l Between the bottom of the hammer 7 and the bottom 5a of the barrel 5 is the coil spring 6 Whicligis compressed when the hammer is drawndown by the-trip arm 7 land held compressed when the trip arm is turned to the right 'or left into one of the lateral portions 8 of theT sllaped'slot 7.
The alarm holder 4 is circular in plan view and of just suilicient size to admit the barrel 5 and permit it to extend-a short distance below its bottom edge. An arm 14 attached to the holder is fastened by. one or more screws to the hinged edge of the door 1, see Fig. 3, or if desired it may be secured to the y j emb in the same way. The top edge of the v.holder isl provided with. notches 15 for a pin 16 projecting from the side of the barrel 6 at the proper height-end position.
To operate the alarm, the trip arm is drawn down and vcaught in one of the side slots 8, the plug is then unscreved and ablank cartridge placed in the hole 10 therein and the lug returned to lace. j Assuming that the holder is'attached) to the door, the burglar alarm is inserted in the holder 4,. if the cartridge is to be exploded before the door opens many inches, in such manner that the head 17 of the trip' arm 13 will rest a ainst the jamb 2 and the pin 16 enter one oi t ienotches 15 inthe upper edge of the holder 4 to pre vent the barrel turning.
lf the alarm is not to be sounded until the door is opened wider, the trip arm Will not be enter another one of the notches 15. When the holder isattaohed to the. jamb, the arm 13 will rest against the door.
alarm adjustable around its axis in the ho der is because door frame moldings have dierent conformations' and project at varyi distances beyond the plane 'of the door. Ilherefore if the connection between the burglar alarm and its holder were not an adjustable one; it would at times be practically impossible to use the device because the arm 13 would be tripped by the projecting molding of the door frame before the barrel of the alarm could be seated; or if set 'for moldings of this type, the door could be opened with impunity for a certain distance when the Vdoor frame moldings are flat. Again, if it be Patented Aug. 25, 190s.
placed so close to the door and the pin 16 Will l A further reason for making the bur lar desired to ventilate a rooin, or Jfor any other reason it is deemed best to have the door remain open a short distance7 this is rendered possible by the adjustable connection be tween the burglar alarm and its holder as Will be easily understood.
In a burglar alarm, the combination of a cylindrical barrel having a cartridge holder at one end, a spring operated plu Within the barrel for discharging the cartridge, a trip arm for releasing said plu and a in rejecting from said barrel, Wit a' holder For said barrel provided with an arm for attaching the samebetween the edge of a door and the door joint and having a series of notches therein Jfor engaging said pin and holding the barrel While so engaged against turning in said holder and the trip arm at dierent an-v gular positions in respect to the plane of said arm. t
In testimony that I elaineA the foregoing as my own, have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
