BU RGLAR-ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,365, dated June 13, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. REIFF, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to burglar alarms and consists of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following specification IO and shown in the accompanying drawings which form a part thereof.
More particularly my invention relates to portable burglar alarms and consists of certain improvements in construction and ar- I 5 rangement of parts whereby the device is rendered more convenient and efficient.
My invention includes certain improvements in the devices for detachably attaching the apparatus in operative position to the frame of a door or window.
The invention also relates to the employment with the alarm apparatus of a cartridge magazine; and to other improvements and combinations of parts which are hereinafter 2 5 more fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawingsz-Figure l is a perspective view of a portable burglar alarm embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same attached to the 0 frame ofthe door. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same showing it detached from the door frame. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional View on the line w:2c of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the device; and Fig. 6 is a sideelevation of the device, with the cartridge magazine partly open.
A is the case or shell provided with a cap or cartridge bore or seat a, which preferably extends through one end of the case or shell as shown. By having the bore or seat a open in this manner, a louder sound is obtained and the possibility of the injury of the parts from the explosion is prevented.
B is a hammer pivoted at 1) within a recess of the shell or case A and having its end in position to strike the cap or cartridge when supported in the bore or seat a. The hammer B is adapted to be opened as shown in Fig. 1.
D is a spring for actuating the hammer B when moved by the door or other object in the usual manner.
E is an attaching screw or pin received in a socket e and movable longitudinally therein. The screw E is also removable from the socket 6 so that it may be left attached to the door 5 5 or window frame as shown in Fig. 3 and the case A removed.
F is a set screw for clamping the attaching screw E in any position, either when drawn out for attachment to the door or window frame, as shown in Fig. 2, or when pushed wholly in, as in Figs. 5 and 6. p
G is a cartridge or cap magazine carried by the case or shell A and containing one or more cartridges or caps 9. While it is immaterial to my invention in what particular manner this cartridge magazine is constructed and arranged in connection with the shell or casing A, I prefer to construct it as shown in Figs.
1, 3, 4, 5, and 6, in which it consists of a box H pivoted'as at h to the body of the shell or casingA. This box H may be locked in any convenient manner, as by the pin cand elongated slot d. The box H may be pivoted at h with sufficient looseness to permit the free end to be lifted sufficiently to let the pin 0 pass through the slotd when the box is to be unlocked.
In Fig. 2, I have shown the cartridge magazine formed in an extension or continuation So of the socket e.
I is a plate pivoted and held by aset screw J to the body of the shell or casing A, by which the device may be attached 'to a window-or door frame instead of by the screw E, when the position of the screw is not suitable to the direction in which the door or window would open.
In applying the device, the screw E is drawn out, and having been clamped by the set screw 0 F, it is screwed into the door frame K adjacent to the jamb; the hammer B is raised so as to be in the path of the opening door L, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and a cap or cartridge is placed in the bore a. Any move- 5 ment of the door L will strike the hammer and move it sufficiently to permit the spring D to act upon the hammer and snap it upon the cap or cartridge.
During the daytime, or whenever it may be unnecessary to use the alarm, the caseA may be removed leaving the screw E in the frame,
ready for the attachment of the case A when it is again desired to use the apparatus.
With the cartridge magazine constituting a part of the apparatus, there will always be a cap or cartridge at hand when required; and while the apparatus is not in use the cartridge or cap may be removed from the bore or seat a. and placed in the magazine.
\Vhile I prefer the minor details of construction which have been shown, I do not mean to limit myinvention thereto, as it is apparent that they may be varied, but
That I claim as my invention is as follows:
1. A portable burglar alarm consisting of an outer case or shell provided with a cartridge seat and having a longitudinal socket, an attaching screw movable longitudinally in said socket, means to clamp the screw in any desired position and a spring actuated hammer.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a portable alarm consisting of the case A provided with the seat a and the socket e, the attaching screw E movable longitudinally in the socket e and removable therefrom, and the clamping screw F for clamping the screw E in any desired position.
3. As a new article of manufacture a portable alarm consisting of the shell or case A having a seat a, the spring actuated hammer B, carried by the shell or case and the plate I pivoted to the case A.
4:. As a new article of manufacture a portable alarm consisting of the shell or case A having a seat a, the spring actuated hammer B, carried by the shell or case the plate I pivoted to the case A, and set screw J adjacent to the plate I.
