LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BARTLETT KREUZ- nnnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in combination locks and comprises the construction of a combination lock provided with means whereby the combination of the lock may be readily changed.

One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a simple combination lock comprising a locking bolt provided with a plu rality of spaced lateral lugs and means for automatically releasing said bolt from a locked position when the combination tumblers are brought into unlocked position.

YVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combination padlock embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. l is a horizontal sectional View taken on line l:l of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail of a tumbler; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a part of the look.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the body of the lock, which as shown is in the form of a padlock. This lock is provided at one of its upper corners with an upstanding shoulder 3, the upper end of which is bifurcated to form a pair of laterally spaced lugs 4t and 5, respectively. The upper edge of the lock body is also recessed longitudinally, as at 2, the purpose of which will be disclosed. A cylindrical looking bolt 7 extends through an opening 6 in said shoulder or projection 3 and is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced lugs 8. The head 9 of the locking bolt fits in a lateral and cylindrical socket 9 formed in the outer edge of the shoulder or projection 3 and a coil spring 10 is arranged between the inner end of said socket and the Specification of Letters Patent.

A series of cylindrical cup-shaped tumblers are rotatably mounted upon the upper recessed edge of the lock body. As shown, one side of each tumbler is closed in by a wall 13, its adjacent edge provided with an annular recess 11 and its opposite edge with an annular rim '12 and the tumblers are arranged in position with the rim of one tumbler seating in the recess of the adjacent tumbler.

An end piece 1 1 is removably secured to the recessed side edge of the lock body by a, pair of spaced pins 15 which project laterally from the latter and a screw 16 which screws through said end piece into the lock body. The end piece or section 14 is formed with a longitudinal recess or channel 17, the side walls of which are provided at directly opposite points with vertical grooves 18. A plate 19 formed with longitudinal flanges 20 is slidably secured in the grooves 18 and serves to close the side of the slot 17. A shackle 22 is pivotally secured to the upstanding ears 4 and 5 and is provided with the usual bolt receiving end 23.

lVhen the tumblers are in iuilocked position or when the apertures formed therein are in alinement with the lugs of the locking bolt, the spring 10 will force the head .9 of said locking bolt outwardly through the end piece 3 thereby removing the opposite end of said locking bolt from the opening formed in the end of the shackle 22. When it is desired to lock the shackle to the locking bolt, said shackle is brought into locking position by inserting the free end 23 thereof in the slot 17, forcing the outer end of the locking bolt inwardly to engage said shackle end and turning the locking tumblers into locking position on said locking bolt. WVhen the shackle end 23 is held in locked position, it will be-impossible to remove the slidable plate 19, but when said shackle is placed in an open position, said slidable plate may be removed from the end piece let and, by detaching said end piece from the lock body 1, the tumblers may be re-arranged or changed so as to produce a new combination.

movable end piece or section arranged at the inner edge of the lock body and having a longitudinal recess in its upper edge to receive the free end of the shackle, a series of cylindrical tumblers, each provided with a central transverse bolt receiving aperture, and a lugreceiving recess in the wall of its aperture, rotatably mounted upon the upper recessed edge of the lock body, a locking bolt provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced lugs, extending through the apertures of the tumblers, a removable end section adapted to cover the free end of the shackle and resilient means tending to maintain the locking bolt in retracted position.

A look comprising a body portion having its upper edge recessed longitudinally, an upstanding projection formed at the upper outer corner of the lock body, a shackle pivoted to said upstanding projection, a removable end piece or section arranged at the inner edge of the lock body and having a longitudinal recess in its upper edge or end to receive the free end of the shackle, and oppositely disposed grooves in the side walls of its recessed portion, a series ofcylindrical tumblers, each provided with a central transverse bolt-receiving aperture and a lug-receiving recess in the wall of its aperture, rotatably mounted upon the upper recessed edge of the lock body, a locking bolt provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced lugs, extending through the 1 apertures of the tumblers, resilient means tending to maintain the locking bolt in retracted position, and a removable cover plate to close the'outer side of the recessed portion of the removable end section, the former having tongues at its side edges to enter the grooves in the recessed portion of the latter.

A lock comprising a body portion having its upper edge recessed longitudinally, an upstanding projection formed at the up per outer corner of the lock body, a shackle pivoted to said upstanding projection, a removable end piece or section arranged at the inner edge of the lock body and having a longitudinalrecess in its upper edge to receive the free end of the shackle, a series of cylindrical tumblers, each provided With a central transverse bolt-receiving aperture and a lug-receiving recess in the wall of its aperture, rotatably mounted upon the upper recessed edge of the lock body, each of the tumblers being also provided at one edge with an annular tongue and inv its opposite edge with a corresponding recess and being arranged in position with the tongue of one tumbler seating in the recess of the adjacent tumbler, a locking bolt having a plurality of longitudinally spaced lugs, extending through the tumblers and the removable end section, and adapted to engage the free end of the shackle, and resilient means tending to maintain said locking bolt in retracted position. v

A lock comprising a body portion having its upper edge recessed longitudinally, an upstanding projection formed at the upper outer corner of the lock body, said pro jection being formed in its outer edge with a lateral socket, a shackle pivoted to said upstanding projection, a removable end piece or section arranged at the inner edge of the lock body and having a longitudinal recess in its upper end to receive the free end of the shackle, a series of tumblers, each provided with a central bolt-receiving aperture and a lug-receiving recess in the wall of its aperture, rotatably mounted upon the upper recessed edge of the lock body, a locking bolt provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced lugs, extending through the tumblers and the removable end section, and adapted to engage the freeend of the shackle with its head seating in the socket of said projection and a coil spring arranged in said socket to normally maintain the locking bolt in retracted position.
