SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,219, dated December 19, 1899.
Application filed October 14, 1899. Serial No- 733,555. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB J. DILLENBECK and EMIL FLUESO, of Pulaski, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to looks.
Our object is to produce an improved lock for boxes embodying a lock-plate adapted to be secured upon the inside of a box-body, a hooked sliding bolt seated in said plate and having lateral arms for guiding said bolt, and projections or lugs upon said arms entering recesses in the lock-plate when said bolt is reciprocated for looking or unlocking to hold the bolt in place, said bolthaving an opening entered by a part of the key and the key having a bit or ward entering said opening and engaging with a side wall thereof to shift the bolt when the key is turned. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the look as secured upon the inner face of the front of a box-body. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line or :0 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line y y in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a like View on the line 3 3 showing the key turned. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the front or outer face of the bolt. Fig. 6 is a plan of the front or inside of the lock-plate.
Ais part of the body of a box. 2 is the front thereof, 3 the bottom, and 4 the back.
The lock-plate comprises a body 5 and lateral ears 6, offset from the body and creating a chamber to receive the lock-hook or bolt '7. This comprises a body notched adjacent to its upper end to create the hook or lookingtongue 8; also provided with an opening 9 and lateral arms 10, each provided with projections or lugs 11, and each arm is somewhat curved.
The body of the bolt lies in the chamber in the lock-plate, and its arms fit loosely in notches out in said plate.
A key 12 is provided, havinglateral notches to receive the walls of an escutcheon-plate, having alsoapoint 13, which enters a hole 14 in the lock-plate and forms a pivot upon which the key turns. straight face on one side of said point and an inclined face on the opposite side, creating an inwardly-projecting ward. or bit which enters the opening in the bolt and engages with its wall to shift the bolt when the key is turned. When the key is thus turned, the
lug on the bolt on one side passes under the edge of the lock-plate, springing the bolt-arm on that side, and springs into a recess 15 in the lock-plate, and this looks the bolt in the lock-plate and prevents accidental shifting of the bolt.
The key can be used without an escutcheon, in which case the side notches can be omitted.
The lock-plate can be stamped from sheet metal with a die, the bolt with another die, and the key with a die also.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1. A look comprising a lock-plate comprising a body having ears offset from said body, combined with a hooked bolt seated and reciprocated in said lock plate, and having spring arms projecting through the lockplate, and means to shift said bolt.
2. A look comprising a lock-plate comprising a body having recesses in its inside face, and ears offset from said body, combined with a hooked reciprocatory bolt within said body provided with spring-arms having projecting lugs adapted to enter said recesses and lock the bolt when it is shifted, and a key having a ward entering an opening in said bolt and engaging with a wall thereof when the key is turned.
