EUGENE E. BARTHOLOMEW, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGLE STAVE BARREL COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
BARREL.
Original application filed September 10,
Specification of Letters Patent.
1903, Serial No. 172,625. Divided and this application filed August 6, 1907.
Patented Aug. 18, 1908.
Serial No. 387,310. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE E. BAR- THOLOMEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to that type of barrels which are made from veneer, and has for its object the provision of a barrel that is simple and economical of construction, that When headed up will preserve a true barrel shape and that is particularly useful wherever a veneer barrel may be desirable. The barrel is preferably formed from a single blank which is gored at the ends in a manner which will permit it to assume a true barrel form when headed up and at the same time provide small openings for the purpose of ventilation. In forming such gores, I am enabled to make use of very simple and inexensive mechanism and to produce a very satisfactory barrel at small cost.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application is a division from my prior app ication filed September 10, 1903, Serial No. 172,625.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 represents a blank of which the body of the barrel may be formed and Fig. 2 represents a completed barrel as formed from said blank.
The completed article is shown at 10, but its body portion is made of a single piece 11, or may be made of a plurality of pieces or blanks of considerably greater width than the ordinary stave, such body portion being provided with recesses extendmg inwardly from the edges thereof.
Each of the recesses is of stepped form, bein made up of several kerfs of varying widt s. Three such kerfs, 12, 13 and 14 are shown for each recess, although the number thereof may be varied. The kerf 12, which is formed adjacent to and extends through the edge of the blank is the widest curve of the recess; kerf 13, which extends inwardly from the kerf 12, is of less width than the kerf 12; and the kerf 14, which extends inwardly from the kerf 13 is the narrowest of the three kerfs. A particular point of advantage in the shape of these recesses is the fact that, in making the same, no special machine is needed, it being only necessary to mount several saws of different diameters on a commom arbor, enabling the gore or recess to be formed in a very economical manner.
In making up the barrel from the blank herein described, the said blank is brought around a former, the edges 15 and 16 are brought into contact, and the ends of the blank are compressed so that the ends of the kerfs 12 will be brought into contact on the inside of the barrel. The inner ends of the kerfs 12 and 13 will not be entirely closed, leaving openings 17 and 18 extending entirely through the barrel and providing means for ventilating the same. The barrel will be provided with the ordinary end hoops 19 and intermediate hoops 20. In addition to its adaptability for a ventilated barrel,
the form of blank herein described is useful for nail kegs, the openings 17 and 18 in a blank for such kegs being sufficiently small to prevent the nails from escaping readily therefrom.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A blank for the body of a barrel or keg, oblong in form and having parallel sidesintended to constitute the ends of the barrel or keg, said blank having kerfs extending in from said sides, each of said kerfs diminishing in width from the side of the blank and being stepped, substantially as specified.
2. A barrel or keg having its body formed of a blank or blanks having kerfs extending inwardly from the sides of said blank or blanks, each of said kerfs diminishing in width from the side of the blank and being stepped, whereby, when the blank or blanks are contracted at the sides thereof by the application of the hoops, graduated openings are provided in the barrel or keg for ventilation, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE E. BARTHOLOMEW.
