Be it known that I, IeNA'rIUs GEnAor, residing in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and lmroved Tailors Appliance, of which the folowing is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an economical and simple 'appliance more especially adapted for use by merchant tailors.

In the operation of marking off the pattern on the cloth from which the garment or suiting is to be made, the merchanttailor or cutter generally uses one or more pieces of chalk of special designs, commonly known as cutters chalk and also requires weights, usually the cutters scissors, for holding the cloth flatwise upon the cutting table. In using the chalk, it is necessary to keep the beveled edges sharp, and that the cutter usually does by scraping the edge of the chalk with a knife blade, and ofttimes with the scissors blade. This method of sharpening the chalk has many disadvantages, first, the danger of the chalk shavings falling or scattering over the cloth, the producing of a rough or broken marking edge on the chalk and-the rapid consumption of the chalk.

My invention has for its purpose to provide a simple neat and inexpensive appliance or device, which can be conveniently utilized as a weight for holding the cloth piece from which the garment is tobe cut, flatwise on the table, which has means for quickly and properly sharpening the chalk edges, under the minimum danger of breaking the said edges; and which also serves as a means for collecting the chalk shavings so that none of the loose chalk is Vallowed to fall or scatter upon the goods to be cut.

` l/Tith the above objects in view, my invention consists of an appliance for the purposes stated embodying certain details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a view that illustrates the appliance as being utilized as weights for holding down cloth to be cut. Fig. 2, is a perspeotive view of the device and illustrates the manner in which the chalk is passed over the sharpeningblade. Fig.l 3, is a longitudinal section, and showing the manner in which the top or cover plate is applied to the hollow body. Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section thereof, the cover being shown to its closed and locked position. Fig. 5, is a cross section of the appliance taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4, with the line of section running lengthwise of the knife slot, and illustrating a slight modification of the external shape of the sides of the appliance as hereinafter more fully described.

In the practical construction, my improvement comprises a hollow body a preferably of metal glass or other heavy material, so that the said body will serve as a weight, it having a flat smooth bottom whereby it can be readily shifted or slid over cloth from one place to another` during the operation of marking off or cutting the pattern.

The body a is preferably made tapering in cross section from the bottom to the top, with rounded corners, and sides may be ornamented by tgrooving the same lengthwise as at c on Fig. 2, the grooves also serving' as finger holds, for readily grasping it, or they may be smooth as in Fig. 5, especially when the appliance is to be used as an advertising media to give a large surface for an advertisement on each side, it being understood that the ends might be also thus utilized,

To provide for conveniently and positively locking the top l) onto the body a, the latter has the inner upper edge of one of its ends inclined to produce an undercut flange a and its opposite end, in a plane with the said flange a, formed with a threaded horizontal aperture a7 to receive a clamp screw c having a milled' head c and provided for engaging the pend-` ent cross flange b3 that has a depression b4 in the front face which is slightly beveled inwardly so the ilange will make a close fit with that end of the body when closed down as' shown in Fig. 4. At the other end the cover or top plate b has the pendent cross flange 57 whose outer face inclines outwardly whereby to vsnugly fit under the flange of and thereby lock that end of the cover plate to the body al it being readily apparent that in fitting the top b onto the body a, as in the manner shown in Fig. 3, that when the top is closed down the members a and b7-will engage, and

by a slight turn of the screw c, the top Vbwill be Vshifted lengthwise sufficiently to make a tight interlocking of the flanges a and o7, the front end being clamped by the screw, thus a simple but positive locking of the top l) on the body a and therebyovercome danger of thetop coming off and spilling the chalk powder onto the cloth, thus making the appliance well adapted as a weight.

The top b about midway its length has a diagonally dis osed'slot bs and a diagonally disposed lug 9, having an inclined face for receiving the cutting planer blade d, whose cutting edge extends up through the slot bs, the said blade being adjustably mounted on the lug b9 by the set screw c3, as clearly shown in the drawing.

From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawing, the advantages and the uses for which my invention is adapted will be readily understood. The saine while providing a suitable weight for holding down the cloth, also serves as a ready means for sharpening the chalk (see Fig. 2') and also for collecting the chalk dust or shavings (see Figs. 3*4 an'd 5) its advantage as an advertising media being also apparent.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An appliance of the character stated, comprisingl a hollow body-having an underof one ofits ends esame cut Vinner edge at one end, a non-rotatable cover plate having a slot, and an inclined pendent flange for interlocking with the said undercut inner edge of the hollow body, a

2. As a new article of manufacture, an appliance of the character stated, comprisin a hollow body ada ted for forming a weig t, said hollow body h inclined outwardly to form an undercut flange, a clamp screw mounted through the other end of the body in line with the undercut flange, a cover plate having a transversely diagonal slot and a penda cutter blade adjustably mounted on the said' lug for cooperating with the slot, one end o f the inner plate having a pendent rearwardly inclined flange for engaging the undercut flange on the hollow body, the opposite end ofthe cover having a pendent transverse flange having a socket for receiving the end of the clamp screw, all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
