or chalk, without soiling the hands, and
without wasting the chalk due to breakage when sharpening.
Another object of this invention is to provide a soapstone sharpener that can be advantageously used by tailors, and dressmakers, for providing a piece of soapstone or similar marking substance with a beveled marking edge.
A further object of the invention is to provide a soapstone sharpener in which the waste product is collected, and can be saved and used for other purposes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a durable and compact device that can be easily operated without clogging. With the above andother objects 111 View which will more readily appear as the in,-
, vention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination parts to be described, and then claimed. I In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the sharpening device, Fig. 2' is a side elevation of the same, Fig. disa "ertical longitudinal sectional viewbf the device partly in elevation, and Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional view of the devices In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a rectangular casing having end T flanges 2, to permit of said casing being secured to a suitable support. The casing is provided with an open side 3 for a drawer 4 having a front plate 5 adapted to close upon the open side of the casing 1, said front plate 5 having a suitable knob or button 6 to permit of the drawer being easily removed. 7
The top of the casing 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 7, and mounted upon said casing is a cylindrical housing 8, disposed longitudinally, relative to the casing 1 and above the slot 7 said housing being secured to the casing 1, by bolts9 and nuts 10. The rearjwall of the housing 8 is provided with a central outwardly extending sleeve 11, and journaled in said sleeve is a shaft 12 having the innerend thereof provided with a rotary cutter, while the outer end of the" shaft, 12 is provided with a detachable crank 13. The rotary "cutter comprises a disk provided with a hub 14: and having a plurality of tangentially disposed cutter blades or knives 15, said, knives connected to one face thereof being triangular 1n cross section, with the side edges thereof converging toward the hub 14:, the front and rear edges thereof in vertical parallel planes, and the arrangement of said knives providing spaces 16 for clearance of material cut. from a piece of "soapstone held in the path of the front edges of the knives. The knives or cutters V extend from the hub 14 to the edge of the disk.
The housing 8 is provided with a detachable front plate 17 secured by bolts 18 and nuts 19 to a peripheral flange 20, carried by' the housing 8. The upper edge of the flange 20 is cutaway, as at 21, to accommodate a chute" 22, in which a piece of soapstone, or chalk is placed to beheld in position to be operated upon by the rotary cutter. The chute 22 is cutaway, as at '23, and thiscut away portion, in connection with the cut: away portion of the flange 20, permits of a piece of soapstone being manually held by one hand while the crank 13 is rotated with the other. The soapstone or chalk removed by the knives15, of the rotary cutter, passes be tween the plates to the rear side of the cutter and descends into the drawer 4. Since the rotary cutter extends into the slot 7 the soapstone or chalk carried by the knives will be of construction can be varied or changed as to the shape, proportion and mannei' fas- A chalk sharpening device comprising a casing, a drawer slidahly mounted in said casing, said casing having its top provided ivith a longitudinally extending slot, a housing mounted upon said casing and opening into said. slot, a sleeve projecting rearwardly from said housing, a shaft journaled in the sleeve and extending in the housing, a disk having a Centrally disposed hub connected to said shaft, tangentially disposed knives connected with one face of said disk and extending from said hub. to the edge of the disk, a crank connected to the shaft for ro tating the disk and further adapted to prevent longitudinal movement of said shaft, and an inclined chute connected with the top of the housing and adapted to position a piece of chalk engaged by said knives whereby the chalk is sharpened.
