CIGAR-TIP-CUTTING ATTACHMENT AND FASTENING DEVICE FOR CIGAR-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Application filed January 11, 1908. Serial No. 410,385.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Tip-Cutting Attachments and Fastening Devices for Cigar-Boxes, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful im rovement in cigar tip cutting attachment anc fastening device for cigar boxes, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device by means of which the tips of cigars may be readily cut off and collected within the cigar box, and another object is to so construct a tip cutting device as to provide a fastening which will keep the lid of the box closed.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skillecL in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part ,of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a cigar box having my improved tip cutter attached thereto, a piece of a cigar and the tip therefrom and the lid of the box closed shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2, is a vertical section thereof at the line 5t' l7 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3, is a front elevation of a cigar box partly broken away to show the conical hole into which the cigar is inserted. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the cutter, Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the perforated cutting plate, and Fig. 6, an elevation of a modified form of cutter.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A re resents the body of the cigar box and B tie lid thereof. The front wall of the cigar box is provided with a conical hole C cut so as to form a recess beneath the lid, as indicated at C.
Back of.the hole C is attached to the wall a perforated plate D by means of the fastening I points D the upper edge of which is turned over, as indicated at D so as to extend over the top of the inner front wall of the cigar box, thus forming a support'for the conical hole C and a guide for the cutter E, which is rigidly secured to the lid of the cigar box by means of the fastening points E. On this cutter is also formed the projection E so that when the lid is closed this projection will snap into the conical hole D formed in the cutting plate D, thus holding the lid of the box in a closed position.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a slightly modified form of cutting plate in so much as the cutting edge is formed by cutting a V-shaped notch therein, and it will be readily seen that when this cutting plate comes in contact. with the cigar, two cutting edges will be brought to bear on the same and readily cut the tip therefrom. also have the projection F formed thereon so that when the lid of a cigar box is closed it will engage with the conical hole formed in the cutting plate thus holding the lid of the box in a closed position.
In practice, when a person wishes to take a cigar from the box he places his finger in the recess formed by the hole 0 beneath the .lid and is thus enabled to apply a great amount of power upon the lid, and it also relieves him of having to use his finger nails or a knife. When the cigar is removed from the box and it is desired to cut the tip therefrom, the cigar is placed in the conical hole Cand passes through the hole D then the lid is closed down, which action cuts the tip from the cigar andallows the projectionE to engage with the hole D thus fastening the lid and collecting the tip within the box.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
1. In combination with a cigar box provided with a lid, cooperating means carried by the box and lid whereby when said lid is closed a cigar may be cut and said lid automatically locked to said box at the completion of the cutting operation.
2. In combination with a cigar boxprovided with a lid, means for cutting the tip from a cigar and in the same'continuous op eration locking said lid in closed position embodying a perforatedplate secured to said This cutting plate would box, and a cutting niernber to cooperate With In testimony whereof, I have hereunto said plate to cut the cigar tip, said cutting EIffiXGCl my signature in the presence of tWo member being provided With a projection subscribing Witnesses.
