Description

- waited gm@ @anni @Hire JOHN A. HAAsE, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Leners Parent No. 89,577, amd .May 4, 1869. 5
IDEPROVEBEENT IN LOORm.
The semaine misma to'm um Lem:- Psn: ma making'pm o! uw um.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN A. HAAsE, of thecity and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Floor- Olamps; and, do heleby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature o f my invention mainly consists of re* taining-jaws, which are confined to one of the joists on which theoor is to be laid, and a forcing-screw and clamping-head on a sliding bar, the said screw and shaft working in one of the jaws, and the'several parts being constructed and arranged as follows:
' In the accompanying drawings, which make a part Vof this specification- A and A' are retaining-jaws, which are provided.
withxhorizontal screws B B, by means of which they are fastened to one of the joists.
The said jaws have their faces checkered with teeth, as seen in tigs. 1, 2, and 3, so as to prevent their slipping on the joists. a 4
The jaw A has a horizontal supporting-shoulder a' and a", which rests on` the joist and gives great stability to the saidrjaw A in preventing its turning during the clamping of the boards. y
The part a" is projected from the contiguousedg of the jaw A, and is strengthened by meansof the bracket b.
The jaw A has a slotted elbow, d, which 'guides the lug s of the jaw A' to preserve the parallelism of the jaws and prevent torsional strain of the screws B B.
day of February, 1868.
C is the forcing-shalt, which turns'iu a nut in the jaw A, its tai1-end bearing against the inner side of the clamping-head D, forcing it against the `outer edge of the contiguous board, to be clamped, as said shaft is screwed forward by means of the handle E, the shaft F of the head sliding in the hole c, through the jaw A.
When desired, vthe forcing-shaft C may have a smooth periphery, ahd be operated by means of a cam or lever.y
It' will readily appear that the retaining-jaws being teethed to prevent slipping on the joist, and the standing jaws A having a support which rests upon thetop of the joist, that great stability is given to said jaws; and that as the clamping-head heilig permanent to its shaft, which has a bearing-surfacethrough the whole width of the jaw A, that it must be moved without the tendency to spring from its normal position, as in other door-clamps.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The construction of the jaw A with a supporting-shoulder, a al', substantially in the manner described, and furthe purpose set forth.
2. The construction of the jaws A and A' with the slotted elbow d and lng e, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
3. A, floor-clamp, composed of the retaining-jaws A and Af, retaining-screws B B, clamping-head D, guiding and supporting-shaft F, and forcing-shaft 0, when the several parts are constructed and arranged for joint operation, substantially iu the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that the above is my invention, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed niy seal, this 25th JOHN A. HAASE. [1.. s.]
