BOOT-BLACKS CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 29, 1908.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Serial No. 418,463.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES I. WETSELL, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-Blacks' Oabinets, of which the followin is a specification, such as will enable those s led in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boot-blacks cabi.- nets or boxes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class comprising a suitable box or case having a hinged cover, and within which is placed a foot rest connected with the box or case and said cover and adapted to be raised above the box or case and supported thereover when the cover is opened, and to be lowered into the box or case and concealed therein when the cover is closed.
' The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;-
Figure l is a sectional side view of my improved boot-blacks cabinet or box, and; Fig. 2 a partial transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a box or case a preferably provided with a bottom a2, and preferably supported by legs a3. The box or case a is provided with a cover a4 hinged at one side as shown at a5, and in practice I rovide a foot rest b referably com osed oiD metal and of any esired form, an to the heel portion of which is pivoted or hinged a link member or late c, the pivotal connection of which wit the foot rest b is shown at c2, and said link member or plate cis pivoted or hinged at c3 to a plate c4 secured to the front of the box or oase midway thereof.
When the heel portion of the foot rest b is in the position shown infull lines in Fig. 1, it rests on the link or late member c and cannot descend lower t an the position shown. The top portion of the foot rest b is provided with a downwardly and backwardly directed arm d, the backwardly directed portion d2 of which is rovided with a slot d3, and the backwardy directed ortion d2 of the arm d is hinged at d4 to a slheve e vertically movable on a hanger f provided at its upper end with a horizontal member f2 rigidly secured to the bottom of the rear portion of the cover a4.
Mounted in the lower end portion of the hanger f, and rotatable therein is a pin g provided with a transverse ilat head g2 adapted to pass through the slot d3 in the backwardly directed extension d2 of the arm d when the cover ai* is raised and the foot rest b thrown iFnto the position shown in dotted lines in The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof.
In the position of the parts shown in full lines in Fig. l, the cover a4 of the box or case a is closed and the foot rest b is inclosed in the said cabinet or box. If now the cover a4 be raised into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the foot rest t will be raised into the position also indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. In this operation the head g2 of the rotatable pin g passes through the slot d3 in the part d2 of the arm d, and by turning said head transversely of said arm the foot'rest t will be locked in the position shown in dotted lines, and will hold the cover a4 in a raised position, and said foot rest will support in this osition any pressure necessary to be put t ereon.
When the operation of blackening apair of boots or shoes is completed and it is desired to close the box or case the pin g is turned by means of the head g2 thereof till said head ranges parallel or in line with the slot d3 and the cover a4 may be lowered into the closed position, and in this o eration the foot rest b will drop into the ca inet or box as shown in full lines in Fig. l.
My invention is not limited to any particular form of cabinet, box or case, all that is necessary being to provide a suitable device of this kind, and changes in, and modifications of the operative parts of my improvement as herein shown and described, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A boot-blacks cabinet or box, comprising a box or case provided with a hinged cover, a foot rest, a plate hinged to the bottom of the heel portion of the foot rest and at the front ofthe box or case, the toe portion of the foot rest being provided with a downwardly extending and backwardly directed arm, a hanger connected with the bottom of the rear portion of the cover, a sleeve movable on said hanger and to which said arm is hinged, the baclwardly directed por# tion of said arm being provided with a longitudinal slot7 and the bottom portion of said hanger witha rotatable pin the head of which is adapted to pass through said slot.
2. A boot-blacks cabinet or box; comrisin a box or case rovided With a cover hinge at the back si e thereof, a foot rest placed in said box or case and the heel portion of which is connected with the end ortion of the box or case by a link or p ate `member hinged beneath the heel portion of the foot rest and at the front of the box or case, a hanger-connected with the rear p ortion of the cover, said foot rest being provided at its toe'portion with a downwardly extending and backwardly directed arm, and a sleeve vertically movable on said hanger and to which said arm is hinged.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name 1nn presence of the subscribing witnesses'this 28th day of February 1908.
CHARLES I. WETSELL.
