Be it known that I, J on): J. METZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Train Order Holders and Deliverers', of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to train-order holders and delivereis; and it contemplates the revision of a device of the kind stated which 18 simple and inexpensive in construction and yet entirely practical and possessed of many material advantages.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part .of this specification, in which:
Figure .1 is an elevation of a train-order holder and deliverer constructed in accordance with my invention. Fi 2 is an enlarged detail section taken in are plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1 and illustrating the relative arrangement of the outer and inner rings and the covering of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrative of the manner in which a train-order is drawn into one of the pockets afforded at the ends of said covering. Fig. 4 is a detail view taken at a ri ht angle to Fig. 1 and illustrating the bifilrcation in the handle. Fig. 5 is a view of a modification hereinafter referred to in detail.
Referring b letter to the said drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 thereof: A is the outer ring of my novel device, which is referably made of resilient steel wire.

C is a covering which is preferably in the form of 'a tube and is open at its ends for an important purpose hereinafter set forth, and D is a connection, preferably a link of wire having hooked ends a. through the medium of which the ends of the overing 0 are connected, and the covering is held taut on the rings A and B. The covering C may be made of any material consonant with the purpose of my invention without involving departure from the invention as claimed, though I'prefer to form it of flexible canvas,

and I also prefer to dip it into boiled or hard oil, this latter in order to render it ,dirt and water proof. I also prefer to paint the coverin or otherwise render the same light in co or so that the same can be readily seen at night as well as in the daytime.
It will be readily understood from the fore going that the rings A and B in combination with the softcovering C drawn taut and fastened in such state on the rings, form an open device which'is light in weight, flexible and soft, and is therefore not liable to injure an engineer or fireman on a fast moving train when he passes his arm through said device with a view of taking the order holder .and deliverer from a )erson standing at the side of the railway. t will also be noted that the said device is well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of corres )onding character are ordinarily subjecte and that because of said device being fiat, see Fi 2, a lamp or lantern held at the side of the device toward an approaching train will illumie nate the device so that the same may be readily seen in adark night by the engineer of the train. The ends of the covering C being open are adapted to receive messages to be placed on moving trains and are also adapted to pro tect messages against the weather and a ainst being torn or otherwise injured. h'i essages may he tucked or otherwise placed in the said pockets without involving de parture from the spirit of my invention, though I prefer to employ message carriers The message carrier shown in Figs. 1 and 3 is employed in combination with the lower pocket of Fig. 1, but it will be understood that when deemed expedient a similar carrier may, in the discretion of the manufacturer, be employed in combination with the upper pocket of Fig. 1. The message carrier illustrated comprises an open loop E, a tongue F, of thin metal, connected to one end of the said loop, and a handle or flnger-picce G connected to the other end of the loop E and extending through an aperture in'the covering C and terminating in an eye or other suitable enlargement. In using the said carrier to place a message in its complementary pocket, the mess-age is arranged with the bight of its fold in the loop E and ,2 i I I. '895,282
with its end portionresting'at opposite sides 1 connected through a chain K with the outer of thetongue F, and the operator then gras s the enlargement of the handle G and pulls the loop E into the covering C until the message is entirely 'incl'osed and hidden from view by the said. covering. It will also be manifest that when it is desired to remove the message from the pocket in the covering C, the same may be readily accom )lished by the engineer introducing his thum and fore finger in the end of the )ocket and grasping both the message and the tongue F, and in this connection it will be noted that incidental to the withdrawal of the message the tongue F will prevent the imposition of strain on the message and in that way will preclude tearing of the message.
H is a stem having a flat portion 1) fixed to the ring A, and I is a handle which is preferably, though not necessarily, equipped with a s )ring-pressod clamping device J adapted to 0 used in. an emergency to clamp a message against the handle in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The said handle dais also provided with a socket d and a bifurcltion e; the said socket (I being designed tokreceive the stem H, and the bifurcation e having for its office to receive the flat portion of the stem. I would have it un lerstood, however, that my invention comprehends connecting the handle I and the open device in a detachable manner so that a person;
standing at the side of a railway may retain the handle I in his hand while the open de vicc is taken on a movin train by the engineer thereof, and when this latter scheme is desirable it is simply necessary to omit the said pin 0, since when this is done the stem H of the open device may be readily withdrawn from its socket in the handle I.
\Vhen deemed ex )edient a clamping de vice like the device or of any other suit-able type may be employed at a suitable point on the outside of the covering C, but this clamping device is not illustrated, inasmuch as it may be employed or omitted at the pleasure of the manufacturer without affecting my invention.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 5, the handle I which is similar to the handle I of Figs. 1 and 4, is detachable from the stem H andv the flat portion 1; thereof, and is designed when detached to be placed in the position shown diametrically across the open device and with its bifurcation 0 receiving the inner ringB of said device, this in order to render the message holder and deliverer compact and permit of it being readily carried. The said handle I of the modified message holder and deliverer is ring A, and hence it will be manifest that when it is desired to use the construction shown in Fig. 5, the handle I may be disengaged from the inner ring B and placed in engagement with the stem HF and employed 7 to facilitate the delivery of the construction as a whole to the engineer or fireman-of a moving train.
The constructions herein illustrated and described constitute thepreferred practical embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that in the future practice of the invention such changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of parts may be made as fairly fall within the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Having describedmy invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: v
1. A train-order holder and deliverer having an open device made up of a suitable frame, and a soft covering arranged on the said frame.
2. A train-order holder and dehverer having an open device made up of inner and outer rings. forming a frame, and a soft cov-' ering arranged on the frame formed by the said rings.
3. A train-order holder and deliverer having an o wen device in which is a pocket closed at its sir es and open at its end and designed to receive and hold a message.
4. A train-order holder and deliverer hav ing an open device in which is a pocket de signed to receive and hold a message, and also having a carrier for facilitating the placing of a message in said pocket.
5. A. train-order holder and dcliverer having an open device made up of a suitable frame, and a soft covering arranged on the said frame and having a pocket designed to receive and hold a message.

A train'order holder and deliverer comprising an open device made up of inner and outer rings forming a frame, a soft covering, of tubular form, arranged on said frame and surrounding the same transversely, and a link interposed between and having hooks at its ends engaged with the ends of said covering.

In a train-order holder and deliverer, the combination with an open device comprising inner and outer rings forming a frame, asoft covering arranged on said frame, and a stem having a flat portion fixednvith reipect to and extending outward from the on her ring of the frame; of a handle having a socket to receive the stem and a bifurcation to receive the said flat portion of the stem, and a flexible connection permanently attaching the handle to the open device and adapted to enable the handle in one position to receive in its bifurcation the inner ring of the frame and in another osition to receive the stem and the flat portion thereof.
