PATENT {ED JULY 28, 1908.

UNITED STATES PATENT omuoa.
JONAS SAHLIN, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
TOOTHPICK-STAND.
in tooth-pick stands with the object of providing means for preventing the re-insertion int?i the stand of a tooth-pick having been use The invention consists, chiefly, in the combination of a closed holder, having a discharge opening in its cover, a discharge-pin, or the like, having the one end recessed and entering the said holder, and means for closthe disch ing the said discharge-opening, said means permitting the tooth-picks to pass through arge-opening in the one direction only, all as will be more particularly described here-below with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing'Figure 1 shows a vertical section of a tooth-pick stand embodying the invention, the holder containing the toothpicks being in its lower-most'position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the said holder in its uppermost position, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line IIIIII in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a closed cylindrical holder having a conical bottom 2 and a conical cover 3. The said holder is movable vertically and is guided by upright rods 4, or the like, secured to a suitable baserplate or foot 5, and by a ring 6 attached to the upper ends of the said rods 4. In the bottom 2 of the holder 1 is provided an opening through which enters a discharge pin 7, or the like, secured to the baseplate 5 and having its upper end recessed. The cover 3 is removable and is held in position by any suitable locking means though I have not deemed it necessary to show such means in the drawing. The cover shown is composed of two conical plates 3 and 3 rigidly secured to each other at their outer edges. The inner or lower plate 3 has a central opening 8 which is closed by-means of two (or more) smooth, spring-plates 9, bearing against each other with their free ends. As will be easily understood the said spring- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 4, 1907. Serial No. 377,270.

up through the opening 8 while they will prevent the re-insertion of a tooth-pick through the same opening. The object of the outer funnel-shaped cover is to protect the said spring-plates and to make the same unaccessible.
When a tooth-pick is to be removed from the stand the holder is lifted until the flange 11 of the bottom 2 (or any other abutment of the holder) strikes the ring 6 (or any other suitable stopping device). In the uppermost position of the holder (Fig. 2) the upper recessed end of the discharge-pin 7 is in level with or somewhat below the lowermost point of the bottom 2, and as soon as such posltion is reached one of the tooth-picks 10 contained in the holder drops down into the recess of thepin 7. When the holder is thereupon lowered the tooth-pick engaged by the pro 7 will slide with its upper end agamst the 1nside of the cover 3 towards the opening 8, and in the continued downward movement of the holder the upper end of the said toothpick will be forced out between the sprmgplates 9 so that it can be convenlently gripped by the fingers and removed from the holder.
Obviously the above described tooth-pick stand may be modified in details without deviating from the principle of the lnvention.
Having now described my inventlon what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A tooth-pick stand consisting essentially of a base, guiding means fixed to and rising from the base, a central discharge pin fixed to and rising from the base and havlng 1ts upper end recessed, a vertically movable closed holder disposed and movable 1n the said guiding means and having a bottom of inverted cone shape in which is a central opening receiving the discharge pin and also having conical plates 3 and 3 arranged one above the other at its upper end; the lower conical plate 3 having a central discharge opening, and the upper conical plate having an upwardly extending, central tubular portion, and the said central opening in the plate 3 and the tubular portion on the plate 3 being considerably larger in diameter than the fixed-discharge pin, and spring plates plates will permit the tooth-picks 10 to pass.
permanently connected to the conical plate my invention, I have signed my name in 3 at opposite sides of the discharge opening presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
therein and extendin up into the central tubular portion of th: plate 3 and having JONAS SAHLIN' 5 smooth opposed sides normally resting to- Witnesses:
gether. EVARD. DELMAR,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JOHN DELMAR.
