To all whom it may concern: W
Be it known that I, FRANK HENRY STER- LING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 80 Myddleton street, Clerkenwell, in the county of London, England, and Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented new and useful Means for the Fastening of Bags, Par-- cels, and Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for the fastening of bags, parcels, and boxes and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, eflicient and generally improved means for the urpose'.
My invention consists essentia y of two interlocking. metal plates or parts which are res ectively attached to or formed into ral wit the respective ends of a band of meta or other suitable material said plates or-parts being constructed with car pieces and another piece or pieces on one plate or part which are adapted to engage with suitably formed portions on the other plate or part ,when the band is. passed round the bag sack parcel or the like to be secured and sealed and each plate or part is perforated to receive a soft metal rivet.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 represents side view of an appliance or device for closing and sealing sacks bags and the like constructed according to this inventionclosedhaving a lining of leather, rubber, or other flexible gripping material. Fig. 2 is outside view. of same 0 ened out. Fig. 3 is inside view of same. i 4 shows a band of webbing or the like for c osing sacks, bags, and the like, or for securing boxes, parcels, and the like, having attached thereto plates or parts constructed according to this invention. Fig. 5 shows same opened out. Fig. 6 shows another form of my invention and showing the band without the lining of leather or other material. Fig. 7 is section on line A B Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is section on line C D Fig. 6. Fig. 9 shows method of ap lying my invention to the securing and seal of packages or parcels.

a is a band of metal, leather, webbing or of any other suitable material formed integral with or attached to which are metal plates or parts I), 0 having perforations d, e, therein to receive a soft metal rivet such as lead or an alloy thereofthe rivet being soft enough to have a seal impressed on one or both ends thereof when riveted up.-
The band a shown byFigs. 1, 2, and 3, is made of metal in two portions connectedtogether by a link f. The link f is made of a piece of sheet metal and may be in the'form of a cross with two long and two short arms the long arms 9 9 being passed through slots '11 Lin the band a turned over inwards and secured by rivets h h or by brazing or any other suitably shaped piece may be employed capable of hinging the two outer portions of the band together. The said plates or end parts, when the band is ofmetal, are arranged at an angle to the band at the points indicated by dotted lines at ac, Figs. 2, 3, and 6. and as shown by Fig. 1.
j is a piece of metal secured by rivets or otherwise to the band a to form a spring to enable the band to be easily 0 ened when it is necessary to release the sac or bag from the appliance.
Secured'to the inside of the band a in all cases when the band is of metal, may be a piece of india rubber, leather, felt, or other suitable material k to afford a good grip round the sack or bag when gathered up and inclosed by the band.
The portion or plate I) of the band a and the plate 7) shown by Figs. 4 and 5 have car pieces Z Z thereon the said ear pieces being turned over towards each other on the inside of the band to receive the portions n n of the plate or portion 0 of the band.
m is a lug made integral with the plate or portion 6 which engages with a slot or recess 0 in the other plate or portion 0 when the band is secured round a bag or sack or parcel.
When the band a has been placed round a bag or sack or parcel the portion 11. n of the plate or end 0 is slid inwards into the ear pieces Z Z and the lug m pushed into the slot oi recess 0 thus firmly securing the band in ace.
p To prevent the band from being removed by unauthorized persons a rivet of soft metal is passed through the apertures e and closed by any suitable means a seal or seals being impressed thereon at same time if desired.
he apertures e e are surrounded by a raised rim 1'. The raised rim is made conical as shown by Figs. 7 and 8 in order to allow the punch, which closes the rivet and forms the seal, to enter the rim easily.
The band shown by Figs. 6, 7, and 8 is made of metal and is not provided with a leather or other grip inside and in order to strengthen the band (in all cases, preferably, where the band is of metal) a groove p is formed in each end portion thereof. The plate or portion a in the band as shown at Fig. 6 is cut away at g g to allow the ear pieces Z Z to pass through the wardly bent sides flare outwards relatively to cut away portion when the band is passed round a sack or bag and the plate or portion 0 is then pushed outwards until the parts n n engage with the ear pieces Z Z and the lug m enters the slot 0. The band is then riveted and seal impressed.
In the cases shown by Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 6, and as illustrated by Figs. 7 and 8 the plate or portion 0 has one side bent downwards and the other side bent upwards while the plate or portion I) has one side bent downwards and the remaining portion thereof plane so that when the two lates or portions 1) and 0 come together the p ane side of b is in contact with the turned up portion of c and the two down the band to enable a knife to be inserted between the plates or parts Z) and c to cut the rivet the turned up portion of a forming a guard to prevent the operator from cutting his hand.
A arcel or package or a box may be securec as shown by Fig. 9 by passing a band of webbing or the like through slots in the package, parcel, or box, bringing the free ends together and placing metal plates 1), c, on such ends respectively and riveting through. Or the plates may be secured to the band by rivets as shown by Figs. 4 and 5. In all cases if raised rims 1" (see Figs. 1, 7 and 8) are used to receive the rivet heads the said rims are made conical as shown to allow the riveting and sealing dies to enter and leave the said rim easily.
I am aware that prior to my invention metal and other bands have been employed for securing receptacles I therefore do not claim a band broadly.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device for securing and sealing bags, sacks, parcels, boxes, and the like, the combination of aband adapted to encircle the mouth of a sack or bag or a parcel, box, or the like, with metal lates at each end of said band one plate being formed with ears and a lug adapted to engage with suitably formed portions on the other plate there being a rivet hole in each plate all substantially as specified.
2. In a device for securing and sealing bags, sacks, parcels, boxes, and the like the combination of a bandv adapted to encircle the mouth of a sack or bag or a parcel, box, or the like, with metal plates at each end of said band one plate being formed with ears and a lug adapted to engage with suitably formed ortions on the other plate each. of said plates liaving a rivet hole surrounded by a rim all substantially as specified and for the purpose stated.
3. In a device for securing and sealing bags, sacks, parcels, boxes, and the like the combination of a band adapted to encircle the mouth of a sack or bag, or a parcel, box, or the like, with metal plates at each end of said band one plate being formed with ears and a lug adapted to engage with suitably formed portions on the other plate each of said plates having a rivet hole surrounded by a rim, the part of the meeting portions of said plates being bent outwards for the purpose stated.
