An important object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable container of small size but of sufiicient capacity to hold a working days supply of carbid,' and to provide for such container a large opening to enable the container to be readily filled and efficient closure means for exposing the opening entirely when the container is to be filled or for exposing only a small part thereof to enable earbid to be readily poured into the lamp carbid cups.
Another object is to provide improved closure mechanism which will adequately seal the container against moisture.
Another object is to give the container such shape that it can be conveniently and comfortably carried in the pocket and will not bend or collapse.
A container embodying the features of my invention is disclosed on the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view, the full lines showing the closure member in open position and the dotted lines showing said member in partly closed position, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on plane 2-2, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on plane 33, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4c is a fragmentary sectional view on plane 2--2, Fig. 1, showing the closure member in closed position.
The container shown is of cylindrical shape and comprises the cylindrical body 5 and the top and bottom 6 and 7, these parts being preferably of sheet steel, and'the top and bottom being preferably domed as shown in order that the container may be conveniently and comfortably carried in the pocket, such doming also giving great strength to the container to prevent bending or collapsing. The body part 5 is set inwardly a distance from the top and bottom to leave the annular bead sections 8 and 9 which also add strength to the structure. The body wall 5 has the opening 10 whose Specification of Letters Patent.

lateral extent is sufficient to enable rapid filling of the container. Snugly fitting the body 5 is a closure member 11 in the form of a band or clamip of spring material, this band falling short by substantially the width of the opening 10 of surrounding the body 5, and is held vertically alined on the body by the beads 8 and 9. The end 11 of the closure band is curled outwardly to form a finger abutment in order that the band may be readily slid around the body part to entirely expose the opening 10 or to partly or wholly close it. The height of the opening 10 is suiiiciently less than the height of the closure band to leave the upper and lower sealing flange sections 12 and 13 to be engaged by the closure band when in its closed position. To assist in holding the closure end of the band snugly against the body an arcuate spring plate 14 engages the inner wall of the body 5 and is secured at its outer end to the band 11 adjacent its end 11' by a rivet 15, and to accommodate the rivet when the closure band is in open position I preferably provide the slot 16 extending laterally from the corresponding end of the opening 11. The rivet connection between the spring plate and band is a distance back from the outer ends of these members in order that such outer ends will clampingly engage the body adjacent the respective ends of the opening 10 to yieldingly lock the closure band in its open or closed position or in partly open position. The plate 14 being of spring material and properly bent will be held at its upper and lower edges firmly against the inner face of the body 5 and against the flange sections 12 and 13, and the plate may be of sufficient length to extend entirely across the rear of the opening 10 when the closure band is in closed position, and both band and plate snugly fitting against the body adjacent the top, bottom and ends of the opening 10, a double seal is provided against escape of the contents, and particularly against the entrance of moisture.
The container shown possesses great strength on account of its shape and when placed in the pocket its domed bottom will fit the body without discomfort and the domed top will resist bending. The beads, besides, forming guides for the closure band, greatly strengthen the container and prevent bending thereof when the container is struck against hard surfaces to shake up or loosen the contents, such striking of the container being the usual practice of miners. In other words, the container is particularly adapted to resist and stand up under the hard usage to which it is subjected. The closure strap can be readily be operated by the hand holding the container and can be quickly brought into entirely open position as shown in full lines Figs. 1 and 2, or to partly closed position as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, or to fully closed position as shown in Fig. 4. The spring closure strap will always snugly engage against the outer surface of the body to seal the container opening from the outside, and the spring plate will always snugly engage the inner face of the body to lock the closure strap to the body and to seal the container opening from the inside when the closure band is in closed position.
I do not of course desire to be limited to the precise construction, arrangement and operation shown and described as changes and modifications may be possible which would still come Within the scope of the invention.
I claim as follows:
1. In a container of the class described, the combination with a container body of cylindric shape having a laterally extended opening in its cylindrical wall, and a band extending more than 180 degrees around said wall and slidable therein to serve as a closure for said opening, said band being of spring material to permit separation of its ends to facilitate its application to the body and to thereafter hold itself thereon by its clamping engagement therewith.
2. In a container of the class described, the combination with a container body of cylindric shape having a laterally extended opening in its cylindrical wall, a band extending more than 180 degrees around said wall and slidable thereon to serve as a closure for said opening, said band being of spring material to permit separation of its ends to facilitate its application to the body and to thereafter hold itself thereon by its clamping engagement therewith, and means for locking said' band againstremoval from the container body after it has been applied thereto.
3. A container of the class described, comprising a body having a vertical cylindrical section provided with an opening, a band of spring material partly encircling said cy lindrical section and slidable thereon to act as a closure for said opening, a plate engaging against the inside of said cylindrical section and secured to said band and serving to lock said band against removal from said body.
4. A container of the class described comprising a body having a cylindrical section provided with an opening, a band of spring material partly surrounding and fitting against the outside of said cylindrical section and slidable thereon to act as an outer closure for said opening, a plate engaging the inner side of said. cylindrical section and secured to said band to move with said band to act as an inner closure for said opening.
5. A container of the class described comprising a body having a cylindrical section provided with a laterally extended opening, a band of spring material partly encircling and fitting the outer side of said cylindrical section and slidable thereon to act as a clo sure for said opening, a plate engaging against the inner face of said cylindrical section and secured at its inner end to said band adjacent one end thereof, the outer end of said plate and-the adjacent end of said band forming a clamp for receiving the edge at the opposite end of said opening to yieldingly lock the band in closed position.
6. A container of the class described comprising a body having a cylindrical section provided with a laterally extended opening, a band of spring material longer than said opening and slidable on the outside of said cylindrical section to act as a closure for said opening, and a plate engaging the inner side of said cylindrical section and secured to said closure band to hold said band against the outer face of the cylindrical section.
7. A container of the class described comprising a body having a cylindrical section provided with a laterally extended opening, a band of spring material longer than said opening and slidable on the outside of said cylindrical section to act as a closure for said opening, and a plate engaging the inner side of said cylindrical section and secured to said closure band to hold said band against the outer face of the cylindrical section, said plate being of sufficient length to cover the inside of said opening when said opening is covered at the outside by said band.
8. A container of the class described comprising a body having a cylindrical section provided with a laterally extended opening, a band engaging with and slidable on the outside of said cylindrical section to act as a closure for said opening, said band being of sufficient length and height to extend beyond the top, bottom and ends of said 7 opening, a plate engaging the inner side of said cylindrical section and secured adj acent its front end to the front end of said band, said plate being of a length and height to close said opening at the inner side when said band closes said opening at the outside. 7
9. A container of the class described comprising a body having a domed top and bottom and an intermediate cylindrical body, said body having a laterally extended opening, a band of springmaterial engaging with and slidable on the outside of said body to act as a closure for said opening,.annular beads at the upper and lower ends of said cylindrical body acting as guides for said band, and a plate engaging against the inner faces of said cylindrical body and secured to the band adjacent its front end for locking said band against removal.
10. A container of the class described comprising a body having a domed top and bottom and an intermediate cylindrical body, said body having a laterally extended opening, a band of spring material engaging with and slidable on the outside of said body to act as a closure for said opening, annular beads at the upper and lower ends of said cylindrical body acting as guides for said band, and a plate engaging against the inner face of said cylindrical body and secured to the band adjacent its front end for locking said band against removal, said plate being of suflicient length to extend across the inside of said opening when said opening is closed at the outside by said band.
11. A container of the class described comprising a body having a cylindrical zone provided with a laterally extended opening, a band of spring material engaging With and slidable on the outside of said zone to act as a closure for said opening, a plate engaging against the inside of said zone, a rivet connecting said plate and band a distance inwardly from the front ends of said plate and band to form a clamping jaw for the sections of the zone at the end s of said opening, said zone adjacent one end of the opening having a slot for receiving said rivet.
