E. PoETr-:Rl HANDBAG FRAME Filed March 7, 1936 Patented Jan. 4, 1938 PATENT OFFEQE HANDBAG FRAME Edward Poeter, Irvington, N. J., assigner to E.
Poeter & Co. Inc., Irvington, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application March '7, 1936, Serial No; 67,618
1 Claim.
-This invention relatesto handbag framesyand hasvfor its purpose and object the provision of a special frame which when used in the 'making of va handbag, permits the insertion therein of pocketportions for various accessories such as a cigarette case, vanity case, and the like. In the present type of handbag these accessories, as now generally used, cause the handbag to bulge along its flexible walls and in consequence an lli unsightly appearance is the result.
The vframe of the present invention isso constructed as to provide a largespace in the upper part of the handbag, this being made possible by reason of the wide walls utilized and formingv part 1v o'ithe handbag frame'.
This handbag frame may be made in several Ways, either by attaching-to the basic walls, U- shapedfmembers for the insertion therein of the ends of the flexible material forming the handbag, or by forming the basic walls themselves into such U-shaped portions in which the ends ofthe exible material of the handbag may be inserted and secured. I
The invention consists further in an improved p hinge'fo'r handbags of this character which is constructed so as to give the greatest amount of resistance resulting from constant use of the handbag.
' With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and more fully brought out in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing, wherein similar reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:-
, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved handbag frame embodied in a hand bag and partially shown;A
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure l; and
Figure 4 shows an alternative structure embodying the invention and in partial perspective view of one section of the frameonly.
Referring to the drawing and more particularly to Figure 2, the base frames designated as III extend along the top of the bag and depend at each end thereof into lateral members of the same width,` indicated at II. these lateral members Il are hingedrby means of a hinge I2 which permits opening and closing of the bag in usual manner. Within these U- shaped base members Ii) and their depending latt.; eral members II,` U-shaped members I3'are pro- At their free ends vided the upper edges I4 of which are secured to y I3 'are in line with each other, as shown in Figure 2. These U-shapecl members I3 may be secured to the base frame members It by soldering or the like which will hold them as they extend around the base members II), includingl the lateral portions II thereof, as shown inFig. l. It will be particularly noted that the depth of the U-shaped members I3 is relatively small and because of this they do not extend very far into the space immediately beneath the base frames Il), and vthis gives a largeY space between the inward walls of the oppositely placed U-shaped members I3 and the base frames I indicated by the reference character I6.
In' a manner Well known in this art, the free edges of the bag material designated as I'I, are rst inserted into a metal clip I8 and then folded upon themselves and in this turned over manner theyare inserted yinto thecavity of the Uf-shaped members' I3, as shown in the left-hand side of Fig; 2. The clip I8 is so disposed with respect to the parts Ill and i that the flexible bag material extends slightly upward in curved form against theportion Id, shown in Fig. 2, all of which gives the bag a nished appearance.
Within the flexible material of the bag, pockets I9 and 20 made of lining or other material are secured to the inner lining of the b-ag and these pockets are adapted to hold a cigarette case as 2|, a vanity case as 22, or other necessities if desired, as shown in Fig. 2.
The bag frames are fastened by a suitable locking device indicated by reference character 23. It will be particularly noted that the depending portions of the U-shaped members I3 are close to the outer edges of the base frames Ill which peculiar construction gives a large interior space as hereinbefore stated, and upon the insertion of a cigarette case, a vanity case, or other accessories, the bag is not expanded beyond its initial shape; and even though it may contain several accessories the correct form of the bag is maintained and bulging or an unsightly appearance as is often the case in the present form of bags, eliminated.
In Figure 3, the hinge I2 is shown in section. This hinge I2 consists of two members 3l) and -3I each having an opening through which a pivot pin 32 upsets, and also has an ornamental button or the like, as indicated by 34. These two frame members 38 and 3l are hinged to the pin 32 and each of these membersrS and 3i has a cut-out portion 35, and when the frame is assembled these two members slide along the free Y surfaces of the two depending or lateral portions l, so that each of the parts embrace the sides or surfaces of the flat frame members Il, and thereby not alone a very secure hold is obtained due to certain frictional contact which hold may be augmented by soldering or the like, but the pivotal point of the bag frames is such that the movement of the bag frames in respect to each other results in the least amountof wear upon the hinge. By such correlationship of parts the frequent opening and closing of the bag does not cause the hinge to be distorted or broken and in consequence gives long lifeV tothe hinge.
Instead of providing for the U-shaped insertions, as shown by I3 inrFig. 2, the base member I shown in Figure 4 by the reference character Illa, may be turned upon itself Yas shown by extension 38 and then bent at 39 'so that the wall 49 is at right angles to the portion lila. This member 40 is again bent Vat right angles so as to form the flange 4| and under the U'shaped member composed of wall 40 and flange 6I and extending portion 42 of the member Illa, the end of the bag with its clip I8, as before described, may be readily inserted and secured therein. For a more fixed security, the flange 4'! as also the ange 43 of U'shaped members i3, may be provided with extending tabs 45 as shown in Fig. 4 and in Fig. .2, which tabs are-well known, and
these tabs are bent over so as to hold the clipY I 8 in position.
From the foregoingit will be seen that my improved bag frame consists in having base mem-V bers and at the outer edges of the two portions forming these base members, bag-holding structures are provided either in the form as shown in Fig. 2 or in the form shown in Fig. 4; and in either case or in such modification thereof as may occur to any one skilled in this art, the
frames I0 are so arranged as toprovide space toY enable the bag to be filled with desired acces- It will also be noted that a novel form of hinge has been provided which is especially adapted for attachment to the particular form of bag frame hereinbefore described.
It is obvious that Various changes and modicationsY may be made in the details of construction and design of the above described ernbodiments of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scoperof the following claim.
I claimzY `In ladies handbags comprising complementary frame sections and flexible bag material held thereby forming substantially parallel walls from the frame sections tothe bottom of the bag, the combination oi? at plates of inverted U-shape, said flat plates,Y being theY same in width, length and thickness, the inward edges Vof which abut each other forming an unbroken exterior surface save for the butt joint therebetween, said fiat plates forming the body members of the frames of the aforesaid complementary frame sections, means on the upper exterior surfaces of said plates at theV abutting edges thereof for, locking said plates together, members one for each plate having a, slot engaged by such member, a pivotal connection for said slotted members below both of said plates, a bagrmaterial retaining member extending along the length of each of said flat plates at the interior surface and the exteri'or edges thereof, said retaining members having ani open space facing laterally outwardly from the outer edges of the iiat plates, the bag material extending therefrom downwardly and inwardly of the outer edges of said atplates sub- Y stantially parallel therewith, said retaining membersbeing disposed apart from each other at the interior of the ilat plates, and providing a space below vthe at plates to enable a cigarette Yand a vanity case to be positioned within the bag immediately Abelow the bag retaining members and extending Within said space without bulging the ilexible sides of the bag when the bag is closed.
