. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 9, 1908.
HARRY MELVIN FEWINS, OF WOODBINE, IOWA.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J'uly 14, 1908.
Application filed January 9, 1908. Serial No. 410,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY MELVIN FEW- INs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodbine, R. R. No. 3, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts, and
more particularly to means for attaching the fence wire thereto, and has for its object to provide a simple means of this character which will effectively serve to fasten the line wires of the fence to the post and also serve as a reinforcement for the post.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the post showing the application of the present invention thereto, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fence wire engaging strip.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a portion of a fence structure A including line posts B and a fence wire C of usual construction.
The posts B are of plastic material, and each post is provided with a combined reinforcing and fence wire engaging strip or wire 5. Each wire 5 is bent to form a plurality of staple shaped yokes 6 comprising inwardly directed spaced members 7 and 8 connected at their inner ends by a vertically extending portion 9. The members 7 and 8 respectively at their outer ends are twisted to form loops 10, for a pur ose to be hereinafter described. Outwar ly of the uppermost loop, the wire is bent to form an inwardly directed member 11, and at the inner end this wire is bent upwardly as shown at 12. Outwardly of the lowermost loop the wire is bent to form a similar member 13, and at the inner end this member. is bent to form a downwardly directed portion 14.
In use, the yokes 6 are embedded in the post during the formation of the same, and the loops 10 are arranged to lie outwardly at one side of the post as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The portions outwardly of the post are thus arranged to receive portions of the fence wire 0, as shown, and the loops 10 which are arranged in vertical alinement are thus arranged to receive a locking pin 15 comprising a vertically disposed shank 16 and a right angularly bent upper end or head 17 arranged to he cutwardly of the uppermost loop. It will thus be seen that the locking pin 1s disposed outwardly of the fence wires and thus serves to securely fasten the fence wire to the post.
A device as herein set forth and described is simple in structure, and may be readily formed from'suitable wire or metallic bars and effectively serves to both fasten the wires to the post and reinforce the post.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a plastic post, of a wire retaining device embedded therein formed of a single length of wire bent to form a plurality of U shaped members having then closed portions in vertical alinement, said wire being bent outwardly of the post to form alining wire receiving loops having their closed ends directed toward the post for holding fence wires spaced from the post, and a vertically disposed pin engaged in said loops for locking fence wires between said pin and said loops respectively.
2. The combination with a plastic post, of a wire retaining device embedded therein, formed of a single length of wire, bent to form a plurality of inwardly directed yokes having parallel spaced members, and connecting vertical and alining portions, said parallel members being extended outwardly of the post and twisted to form horizontally disposed fence wire receiving loops having closed inner endsdirected toward the post for holding fence wires in spaced relation thereto, and a locking pin removably disposed in said loop for confining fence wires between said pin and said loops respectively. In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY MELVIN FEWINS.
