LEMUEL J. HUSTED, OF DENVEROOLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL RURAL ROUTE ADVERTISING COMPANY, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1908.
Application filed. September 9, 1907. Serial No. 391,914.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LEMUEL J. I-IUsTED, a citizen of the United States, residing in. the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal- Reinforced Concrete Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in concrete posts provided with special metal reinforcement and also with a special construction of keeper, whereby the post is admirably adapted for holding wires in wire fence construction.
As shown in the drawing my improved metal reinfoirzement, consists of an integral piece of wire formed into a number of parallel lengths, the said wire being provided at intervals with coils formino anchoring eyes. rlhis wire reinforcement is placed within the mold in which the concrete post is formed, whereby the said reinforcement is embedded within. the post giving the same great strength. These anchoring` eyes formed in one length of the reinforcing wire, serve to form supports for a special construction of metal keeper.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being' made to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. A
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of my improved posts. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same showing wires supported by the keepers. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section of the post shown on a larger scale. Fig, 4 is a similar section taken at right angles to Fig. 3, the metal reinforcement being shown in elevation.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the concrete body of my improved post. INithin this post is embedded a number of parallel lengths 6 formed from an integral piece of wire, each parallel length fbeing provided at intervals with coils or loops 7 forming relatively large anchoring eyes, whereby when the post is formed, the metal reinforcement is securely fastened therein, The anchoring eyes or coils may be located as close together as may be deemed necessary depending on the use to which the post is to be put. The wire lengths 6 are preferably arranged equidistant from one another. When the post is to be used as a fence post, one of the lengths 6 nearer the outside of the post, should be provided with at least as many anchoring eyes 7 as the number of wires in.
height that the fence is to contain. For instance assuming that the fence is to be five wires in height as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one of the lengths 6 nearer the outside of the post should contain at least five anchoring loops 7.
As shown in the drawing the keepers 8 for the fence wires are each composed of two angle members A and B. The portion of each member embedded within the post, forms a right angle, while the protruding art A of the member A is formed into a iook whose free extremity terminates a short distance from the post while the protruding part B of the member B, is formed into a similar but smaller hook occupying a position within the hook A but bent in the o posite direction whereby a space C is left between the two hooks of sufficient size to permit the passing of the fence wire 10 therethrough until it occupies a position between the smaller hook and the body of the post. The two angle members forming the aforesaid keeper are mounted in suitable proximity to each other, their inner portions A2 and B2 being bent in opposite directions. From these portions A2 and B2, each member has an outwardly projecting portion, the two last named portions being parallel to each other and passing through one of the anchoring eyes 7 of the metal reinforcement. The portions A2 and B2 are of sufficient length to prevent their passing through the anchoring eye by an outward pull upon the keeper.
, From the foregoing description the manufacture and use of my improved post will be readily understood. It is evident that in the manufacture of the post, both the metal reinforcement as well as the keepers when the device is to be used as a fence post, must be placed in position within the mold, after which the concrete material is poured into the mold. It is then allowed to dry after which the metal parts are securely anchored.
in the post. Assuming that the keepers 8 are in place, the wire fence may be constructed by slipping the wires through the passage C formed by the two hook-shaped parts A and B of the keeper. The wire l0 then occupies a position within the hook B. In the construction of these posts the inembers of these keepers may be so arranged that when the wire is in place it will be suiiiciently tight Jfor all practical purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A cement 0r concrete post, provided with a metal reinforcement provided with coils at suitable intervals forming anchoring loops or eyes, and keepers each consisting oi two members having angle portions embedded within the post and passing through an anchoring loop or eye, whereby the said keepers are prevented Jfrom being pulled out, the said keeper members having exteriorly protruding hook-shaped parts bent in o posite directions and lying 1n the same plane, the one being located within the other whereby space is left to permit the passage of the fence wire, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
