Description

No. 892,134. PATENTED JUNE 30, 1908.
B. P. COLEMAN 8: W. J. AMBOS. I
LID HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 12, 1007.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. COLEMAN AND WILLIAM J. AMBOS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LID-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed January 12, 1907. Serial No. 352,036.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. COLE- MAN and WILLIAM J. AMBOS, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Lid-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides a novel device for holding the lid or cover of a box open in any desired position so as to display the contents thereof, said device likewise retaining a ticket, or card, in place and upon which the price of the goods may appear,-or upon which ang matter to be made known may be exhibite For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accom anying drawings.
Whi e the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departin from the spirit or essential features thereo' still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lid holder applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the lid holder detached from the box. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device comprises a corner bracket, or piece, the wing 1 being shorter than the wing 2. A brace 3 projects from the upper edge of the short wing 1 and underlaps the lid, or cover 4 of the box 5 to which the device may be fitted. The brace 3 inclines with reference to the wing 1 so as to support the lid, or cover 4 at the desired angle. The brace 3 constitutes an extension of the win 1 and may be bent at its juncture therewith to incline more or less to suit the required angle, or inclination of the lid or cover 4. A flange 6 is provided at the outer edge of the brace 3 to extend along the edge of the lid, or cover 4, and a Wing 7 projects inward from the outer edge of the flange so as to overlap the upper side of the lid, or cover 4, and thereby secure the same against casual closing. The brace 3 and wing 7 constitute in effect, elements of a clasp which grip opposite sides of the lid, or cover 4, to hold the same in the required position. A ticket, or card 8, is adapted to be slipped under the wing 7 and retained in place thereby, and on this ticket or card may appear the price, or other matter to be displayed in connection with the goods in the box 5. A rest projects from the upper edge of the wing 2 and consists of an extension 9 in the plane of the Wing 2 and a flange 10, the latter adapted to overlap the top edge of the end of the box 5 against which the wing 2 may be placed. One or more spurs 11 proj ect inward from the wing 2 and are partly cut therefrom and pressed inward so as to penetrate the end of the box 5 and retain the holder in lace.
The ho der is preferably constructed of sheet metal, hence may be cheaply manufactured, while at the same time admitting of the brace?) being bent to a greater or less inclination as may be required. The holder is fitted to the corner of the box adjacent to the hinge of the lid, or cover, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1. The short wing 1 of the corner bracket, or piece, extends along the rear side of the box, whereas the long wing 2 extends along an end of the box. The lid, or cover 4, is held between the members 3 and 7- of the clasp. The wing, or clamp member 7 may have any form and the holder may be finished, or embellished in any manner so as to produce a pleasing and ornamental effect.
To facilitate the bending of the brace 3, a notch 12 is provided at the outer edge of the brace and wing at their juncture as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A lid holder comprising a corner bracket formed of a pair of wings disposed at an angle to each other, means car lied by one of In testimony whereof We affiX our signathe wings for engaging the box, a brace ture's in presence of two Witnesses.
forming a continuation of the opposite Wing and fitting against the lid, and means carried bagg 5 by the bracefor engaging the lid, a notch being located at the junction of the brace and Wing Witnesses:
to facilitate bending of the former for adj ust- MARK A. FooTE,
