G DANIELS BINDER LOGK- APPLICATION FILED MAR. 16, 1903.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
CHARLES DANIELS, OF ATOHISON, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR 'lO METAL SEOIIONAL FURNITURE COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION.
BINDER-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed March 16, 1906. Serial No. 306,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DANIELS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Atchison, in the State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Binder-Locks; and I do hereliy declare the following to be a full and complete description of the same.
My invention relates particularly to that class of loose leaf binders, wherein the binding I osts are attached to one cover and protrur e through the other cover, which cover is designed to be locked in adjusted position upon said posts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my binder filled with leaves with the front end broken away. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of my binder, showing my binder lock in section. Fig. 3 is a sectlonal plan view of Fig. 2 taken through the line 3. Fig. 4 represents the key by which my lock is operated and Fig. 5 represents a detail of my lock.
More articularly described, A and A represent t e top and bottom covers respectively.
B represents the leaves and O C the binding posts, which are firmly seated u on the cover A and protrude through suita le perforations c, c, in the cover A. Threaded caps O O are fitted upon the ends of the posts 0. C. and are larger in diameter than the perforations c, 0, whereby the cover A when unlocked may be shifted u on the posts without slipping off of the enc s of the posts 0. C.
My lock is inclosed within a casing D which may be bound within the binding of the covers, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be placed outside of the said binding as may be desired. This .casing D is closed at both ends and is perforated, see Fig. 3, so as to allow the osts O. C. to extend therethrough. Lying wit in said casing D, are s ring yokes E fitted with loops of the same s iape as the posts 0. C. but sufficiently larger to permit the said posts to pass freely through the same, (see Fig. 3). One arm of the yoke is sha ed and designed to bear against the side of tlie said casing, while the other arm of the yoke is fitted with a socket e \(Vithin said casing D and extending longitudinally therein, lies a bar F. This bar F is fitted at the center with a perforation f, and at either end with a rounded lug f f which said lugs have sliding engagement with the sockets e e of the yokes. The )erl'oration engages an eccentric G which is rotatably secured within the said casing D. One side of the said eccentric G is fitted with a countersunk squared head g, which is exposed upon the surface of the cover A, (see Fig. 1) and is designed to receive a key II whereby the occentric may be turned. The action of the eccentric upon the arm F causes it to move laterally Within the said casing D, and this lateral movement of the arm F, acting upon the spring yokes E. E. cause them to clamp the posts C. O. extending through them. Upon the release of the eccentric by further action of the said key II, the resiliency of the said yokes E. E. cause them to release the said posts O. C. and the cover A to slide freely upon said parts.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a binder the combination with binding posts, and covers, one of which is attached to said posts, and the other is adapted to slide thereupon, of a lock consisting of a casing attached tosaid sliding cover, perforations in said casing through which said posts are adapted to slide, spring yokes lying Within said casing and embracing said posts, one end of said yokes having engagement with the side of the said casing, an arm lying within said casing and having engagement with the free ends of the said spring yokes, and means for moving the said arm laterally within the said casing.
2. In a binder the combination with binding posts and covers, one of which is attached to said posts, and the other is adapted to slide thereupon, of a lock consisting of a casing attached to said sliding cover, perforations in said casing through which said posts are adapted to slide, spring yokes lying within said casing and embracing said posts, one end of which yokes has engagement with the said casing, an arm lying within said casing having engagement with the free ends of the said yokes, and means for moving said arm laterally within the said casing, consisting of an eccentric 'litted within suitable perforations within said casing and said arm.
3. In a binder the combination with binding posts and covers one of which is attached to said posts, and the other is adapted to slide thereupon, of a lock consisting of a casing attached to said sliding cover, perforations in said casing through which said posts are adapted to slide, spring yokes lying Within said casing and embracing said posts, I one end of said yokes having engagement With the said casing, the other or free end of each yoke being fitted with a socket, an arm lying Within said casing fitted at its ends With lugs, the said lugs having engagement With the said sockets, and means for moving said arm laterally Within said casing.
4. In a binder the combination With binding posts, and covers one of which is attached to said posts, and the other is adapted to slide thereupon, of a lock consisting of a casing attached to said sliding cover, perforations in said casing through Which said posts are adapted to slide, spring yokes lying Within said casing and embracing said posts, one end of said yokes having engagement with the said casing, the other or free end of each yoke being fitted With a socket, an arm lying Within said casing fitted at its ends With lugs, the said lugs Having engagement with the said sockets, and means for moving said arm laterally Within said casing, consisting of an eccentric fitted Within suitable perforations in said casing and the said arm.
