Wilp] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. SCHMIDT, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
INDICATIN G-B OTTLE To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM C. SCHMIDT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicating-Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottles and particularly to that class known as indicating bottles, the object of my said invention being to produce a bottle stopper which will indicate any attempt to refill the bottle after the original contents thereof have been removed.
In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood, I yhave illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, a full and exact description thereof being contained in the annexed specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved stopper located in the neck of a bottle, the bottle neck being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of my imroved device indicating that the bottle has een refilled. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through my improved device. Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of certain parts of my device. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of my device, the several parts thereof being disconnected. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the addition of a disk or washer valve. Fig. S is a vertical section through a modified form of my device. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of said modification showing the parts thereof disconnected. Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. S, with the addition of a disk or washer valve.
In the several views like letters of reference designate similar parts of my device.
A, in the drawings, designates the bottle provided with the cylindrical mouth a which is provided at its lower end with the annular shoulder a and groove a2. Bis a circular disk constructed to snugly fit into said mouth c and rest upon said flange d, said disk being provided with an annular groove l) directly oposite groove a2, forming a recess adapted to be lled with cement a; to lock said diskin place. C is a hollow cylindrical portion projecting upwardly from said disk, the same being open at its lower end and provided at its upper Specification of Letters Patent.

end with the threaded orifice c. D is a transparent cup shaped portion or compartment surrounding said cylindrical portion and of sufficiently larger diameter to form the annular groove d. Said cup shaped portion D preferably extends slightly above the cylindrical portion C and is provided with lugs d d adapted to retain the cup shaped portion D in the center of the mouth of the bottle, thus forming a passage for the outflow of the contents which first flows through openings b in the disk portion B. E is an indicator comprising a ribbon located in the groove d and upon which is printed any suitable word as Refilled, which word is covered with a non-transparent substance which may be readily dissolved or destroyed as a composition of chalk or a thin layer of gelatin.
F is the stopper constructed to close the mouth of the bottle and the cup shaped compartment D and also to prevent access to said cup shaped compartment D, the washers f and f respectively being employed to make airtight connections when the bottle is closed. Said stopper is provided with the screw stem f2 adapted to pass through the orifice c and being prevented from withdrawal therefrom by a locking ring f 3 constructed to -fit in the grooveff.
f5 is a cork or other stopper which is employed to close the lower end of the hollow cylinder C after the ring f3 has been placed upon the stemf G is a conical shaped valve located in the conical shaped portion ai of the neck of the bottle, said valve permitting the outflow of the contents but preventing refilling.
As shown in Fig. 7, an additional valve may be provided by placing a washer H on top of the disk portion B, which it is obvious will act similarly to the valve G, that is it will permit the outflow of the contents through the openings t but will close said opening when the liquid is vforced into the bottle. If desirable this valve may be made bouyant so as to close the openings b if an attempt is made to fill the bottle when inverted.
In Figs. S, 9 and 10, I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention. In this form of construction, instead of the hollow cylinder C, I provide the upright cylindrical portion C with a recess c to receive the stem f This portion C may be made separate from the disk portion B as shown or integral therewith and adapted to be secured thereto by any suitable means.
I designates a disk constructed to'screw into a circular recess J above the groove d, said disk and the wall of said recess being provided with the corresponding notches 'i and respectively, constructed to be filled with cement or a pin to prevent said disk from being unscrewed. Said disk is provided with the openings i2 directly over the groove d and with the central threaded orifice i3 through which the stem f2 is screwed, the same being prevented from being withdrawn by a locking ring as before described.
In Fig. 10, my modified form is shown with the additional washer valve hereinbefore described. It is obvious that a washer valve may be employed instead of the conicalvalve, or in addition thereto.
Although I preferably construct my entire stopper of glass, it is apparent that itis only necessary to construct the cup shaped portion of transparent substance.
The operation of my device is as follows: When desirable to pour the contents from the bottle, the stopper is unscrewed, and the bottle inverted, whereupon the valve or valves become displaced permitting the contents to pass through the openings b, thence out around the cup portion D. It is appar- -ent that the entire contents can thus be poured out without coming in contact with the ribbon E, but when an attempt is made to refill the bottle the valves become reseated thus closing the neck of the bottle, whereupon the mouth will immediately fill and overflow into the groove d coming in contact with the ribbon E and dissolving` the nontransparent 'substance thereon, whereupon the word Relled or other word will become visible through the mouth of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 2.
Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Let* ters Patent is 1. An indicator of the kind described comprising a ribbon and a non-transparent covering therefor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. An indicator of the kind described comprising a ribbon and a perish-able non-trans-v parent covering therefor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
. 3. An indicator of the kind described comprising a ribbon and a soluble non-transparent covering therefor, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a bottle of the kind described, the combination with an indicator, of a nontransparent covering therefor and means whereby the inflow of fluid will remove said covering, substantially as described.
5. In a bottle of the kind described, the combination with an indicator, of a perishable non-transparent covering therefor and means whereby inflowing fluid will be forced into contact with said covering when the bottle is re-filled, substantially as described.
6. In a bottle of the kind described, the combination with an indicator, of a soluble non-transparent covering therefor, means for' protecting said covering during the outow of the contents and means whereby inflowing fluid is forced into contact with said covering of said indicator, substantially as described.
